      Job Description

      Job Summary:

      Under the direction of the Coordinator of Perfusion Services and in collaboration with the Heart Center Director-Advanced Practice & Nursing, this position assists the Clinical Perfusionists in providing extracorporeal support and its related duties to our patient population that requires the use of a heart-lung machine during open heart surgery procedures and for extracorporeal cardiopulmonary support for pulmonary or cardiac failure. Other Perfusion related duties include, auto-transfusion services for intra-operative blood salvage. Point of care blood gas, heparin management system analysis and quality control testing for point of care devices and materials. The role has extensive equipment support of routine maintenance and cleaning of perfusion equipment and inventory management, including ordering and stocking of disposable perfusion products. The position will also be responsible for the equipment and inventory ordering, monitoring, and maintenance for the hospital Ventricular Assist Device program. In collaboration with Heart Center APN director, the position will ensure sufficient device and supply inventory is maintained to support smooth program operations. This position actively supports the Hospital Service Principles and customer service goals through modeling of appropriate behavior and by providing a work environment conducive to attaining these goals.

      Job Responsibilities:

      Clinical responsibilities:

      • Assists in setup and breakdown of perfusion equipment.

      • Assists in point of care blood gas and Heparin Management sample testing.

      • Assists in setup/breakdown and blood management of autotransfusion device.

      • Manages monthly quality control for autotransfusion devices.

      • Assists perfusionist in clinical setting.

      Program coordination responsibilities:

      • Manages quality control and routine maintenance of point of care blood gas, heparin management system devices and materials.

      • Manages and orders perfusion and VAD equipment inventory and stock to ensure uniform day-to-day operations. Manages inventory control of disposables and checks for outdates.

      • Routinely maintains and cleans perfusion equipment as required by manufacturers and department policy.

      • Restocking of perfusion disposables and supplies in cardiac rooms and sub sterile areas.

      • Assists with VAD device tracking and ordering and maintains working relationships with device vendors.

      • Monitor repair and preventative maintenance of perfusion equipment with the coordination of Biomedical Engineering Department and Coordinator of Perfusion Services.

      Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

      • A strong background in science or previous pertinent healthcare related work experience would be preferred.

      • Autotransfusion certificate would be preferred.

      • Good computer skills with working knowledge of Word, Excel.

      • Knowledge of sterile technique and practices preferred.

      • Must possess exceptional organization, problem solving and system improvement skills with the ability to coordinate and integrate complex processes and relationships in an evolving role while working with a diverse workforce.

      • Promotes a positive work environment and demonstrates excellent communication and interpersonal skills, sound judgment and reasoning skills.

      • GED or High School Degree required; Associates or Bachelor of Science preferred.
