      The City of Surprise Community Development Department is in search of a self-motivated, collaborative, and solution-focused leader to step into the role of Senior Planner! This position offers a vibrant and fast-paced environment, responsible for evaluating a variety of complex planning cases and functions. As Senior Planner, you will lead, mentor, and manage a team of Zoning Specialists, as well as act in a lead role for the other members of the Planning Division. You'll be working primarily in an office environment with standard hours of 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday, although some early morning or evening meetings may be required. Future schedule flexibility may be offered once the candidate is current on all aspects of the department’s operations.

      SUMMARY
      The incumbent is responsible for evaluating complex planning cases and technical planning functions including research, review, analysis, presentation, and coordination of rezoning, annexation, general plan amendments, development plans, use permits, and related applications for compliance with City general plan, development, and design codes. The incumbent is responsible for the coordination of application review process with affected parties, including applicant, property owner, planning staff, architects and engineers, City regulatory and review bodies, and the public. The incumbent is responsible for the review of Notices of Decision and Notice of Approval for completeness and efficiency, prepares and presents written and oral reports to regulatory and hearing bodies, including planning staff findings and recommendations. Responds to inquiries from and provides assistance to the public, by telephone, email and in person, regarding development and zoning projects and current City codes. This position is also responsible for evaluating administrative functions and supervisory level direction to and support to the Zoning Specialist and other professional and technical staff, as assigned.


      EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

      Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, architecture, civil engineering, or related field and three years of increasingly responsible municipal planning experience, including two years of supervisory or lead experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Master’s degree preferred.
