      Caterpillar is looking to hire an engineer to design Rock Drill Tools, such as Tricone Bits and Down-The-Hole (DTH) Hammer & bits. The candidate should be able to work in an interdisciplinary team to design Rock Drill Tools by collating ideas and making decisions using first principle thinking. The candidate must be willing to work on a wide variety of product development tasks such as design, simulation, testing, manufacturing, supplier collaboration, DFMEA etc. The job role includes (but not limited to) the below:

      • Design Rock Tools based on simulation, failure analysis, test data, voice of customer etc.
      • Refine and improve product designs by conducting investigations and developing solutions.
      • Use geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) to determine tolerances of key components.
      • Derive simulation methods and run simulations to understand if design meets pass/fail criteria.
      • Strategize & perform design / test / simulation DOE to determine critical influencing parameters.
      • Collaborate with suppliers for manufacturing reviews.
      • Transform test data / simulation data in a format that enables data driven decision making.

      An ideal candidate should possess the below skills:

      Educational requirements:

      • B.E. / B. Tech. in Mechanical engineering (or equivalent) from an accredited engineering college with 4+ years of product development experience
      • M.E. / M. Tech in Mechanical engineering (or equivalent) from an accredited engineering college with 2+ years of product development experience

      Mandatory requirements:

      • Strong in first principle thinking, data driven decision making and should have clarity of thought.
      • Good communication skills – should be able to explain & present his/her ideas to global teams.
      • Excellent understanding of engineering basics (mechanics, dynamics, GD&T)
      • Good in design concepting, parametric modelling and basic simulations (FEA / CFD / pneumatics)
      • Basic experience in data analytics for engineering applications (test / simulation / sensor data)
      • Worked on failure analysis and root cause identification.

      Preferred requirements

      • Experienced in DTH hammer & bits or Tricone bit design / testing / development.
      • Experienced in product development.
      • Understanding of metallurgy / material science, heat treatment and wear mechanics
      • Experienced in bearing system or pneumatic system design.
      • Worked on engineering calculations and mathematical modelling.

      Tools:

      • CAD (any industry standard CAD tool)
      • Data analytics (Excel / Minitab / Power BI or equivalent)
      • Analysis & simulation (Ansys / Creo simulate / Matlab / AMEsim or equivalent)
