      About the Opportunity

      Reporting to the Health Protection Manager, the Public Health Investigator plays a vital role in the health system by providing expert-level knowledge related to enteric illness, vector-borne disease investigations, and environmental health practices relating to outbreak investigation. The Public Health Investigator implements Health Protection Program(s), protecting individual and community health through health promotion and health protection per Provincial Acts, Legislation, and By-Laws. The Public Health Investigator carries out health protection activities required by the Health Protection Act, NS Public Health Standards and Protocols, and associated regulations, such as identifying public health hazards. The Public Health Investigator is a designate of the Medical Officer of Health and fulfills identified roles to eliminate or decrease the risk of communicable disease, a notifiable disease, a health hazard, or public health emergency.

      About You

      We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

      • Bachelor's degree in applied science - Environmental Health (Public Health Option), or equivalent.
      • Certification in Public Health Inspection (Canada)
      • Maintains membership in the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors
      • Minimum 1-year practical experience in inspection
      • Able to conduct risk assessments/analysis and participate in collaborative problem solving
      • Experience providing training and education to groups and individuals
      • Excellent skills in conflict resolution and public relations
      • Able to work independently and in a team setting
      • Operate various measuring instruments and testing equipment
      • Computer expertise in corporate standard software (Microsoft Office) and department-specific software for data search and entry and creating and modifying word processing documents
      • Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment, and have a basic understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
      • Experience and specialized knowledge in Infection Control
      • Thorough knowledge of all legislation and standards relating to Environmental and Public Health
      • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, and potential shift rotation
      • Travel will be required so a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle are needed
      • Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred

      • Permanent, Full-time; 75 Hours Bi-weekly
      • Travel to various sites may be required

      Compensation and Benefits

      $39.23 - $47.59 Hourly

      Successful candidates may be eligible for our benefits package which includes health, dental, travel, long-term disability, and life insurance coverage as well as a defined benefit pension plan.
