      Job Purpose

      As a Research Specialist in the polymer team, you are co-responsible for one of the most important components of paint; the resin. These polymers play a central role in performance, esthetics and carbon footprint contribution. In your role you will work within a fast-growing team, synthesizing new coatings resins for the market and ecological challenges we face today. In this role you will work with team of 4 people and you will report to the R&D Team Leader. Next to that you will work closely with a wide variety of functions, combining expertise and contributing to the next generation of paints and coatings. You will work in a dynamic multicultural environment based on our location in Sassenheim.

      Responsibilities

      • One of the pillars of your job is dealing with synthetic polymer chemistry and solving technical problems in the laboratory.
      • You are able to deliver high quality materials consistently, which are suitable for downstream coating development.
      • You maintain and promote a safe and orderly work environment. Safety is pivotal in AkzoNobel, complying with safety policies and procedures is a crucial aspect of the position.
      • You discuss results with various stakeholders, including the R&D Team Leader, and determine follow-up experiments in close collaboration.
      • You contribute to project activities by reporting reliable results, drawing conclusions, and developing recommendations to internal parties/project leaders outside of your function.
      • You are, or quickly become, familiar with essential standard characterization techniques in the field. These include GPC, GC, NMR, DSC, particle size measurements and rheology measurements which a key indicators for successful binder synthesis
      • You document results and observations in the Sassenheim Polymer Laboratory systems, and keep them up to date. Publishing findings in internal memos and presenting your work are an essential part of your function.
      • You are a team player who assists other team members or stakeholders in the laboratory when necessary.
      • Lab work is inherently flexible and you match your working hours to required experimental timing

      What do you bring?

      • Bachelor in organic (polymer) chemistry (starter or experienced).
      • Eager to do chemistry in a laboratory environment, experience in running organic chemistry or polymer chemistry.
      • Able to identify unexpected results, adept quickly and creatively think forward.
      • Transfer knowledge clearly in writing and via presentations in English and Dutch.
