      Overview:

Alaska's Educational Resource Center (SERRC), in partnership with Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI), is seeking individuals to serve as Assistant Instructors for Raven Writes Traditional Native Foods Writing Camp. The Assistant Instructors on the Classroom Side will work in support of the journal writing and other writing activities in the classroom. There will be two age groups of students each day; rising 3rd and 4th graders will work 9am-12pm, while rising 5th and 6th graders will work 1-4pm. This camp is based on local and cultural traditions for food harvesting and preparation, and is intended to inspire and generate the writing of personal stories around experiences with food, medicine, and family. We strive to model and infuse in our teaching Southeast Traditional Tribal Values. The camp runs for two weeks, Monday through Friday, July 7-18, 2025.

      Position Description:

Camp Staff bring enthusiasm for igniting and nurturing each child's exploration of their Southeast Alaskan culture. These assistants will support the two Lead Instructors in instructing students with curriculum infused with culturally relevant materials and learning experiences, to pursue the goals of developing writing skills and creating a demonstration of learning connected to Tlingit Aáni. They will create a positive and safe learning environment, encouraging pride in Family, Clan, and Tradition, and fostering a harmonious atmosphere by encouraging participation and peaceful resolution of conflicts, as well as the use of basic Restorative Practices.

Before and after camp, assistants will take part in pre-camp meetings, training sessions, and setup, as well as post-camp follow-up, breakdown, and cleanup. During camp, they will join daily check-ins to debrief, address student needs, and prepare for the following day.
