Job summary
As Saving Babies Lives and Fetal Monitoring Lead for our Maternity Unit you will:
Develop, deliver, and lead on multi-disciplinary training programmes as agreed with the Trust Education and Development lead for SWFT Maternity Services and wider divisional staff where appropriate.
Provide strong, visible, and effective clinical leadership with close links to Trust Education and Development team.
Maintain accurate records on trust training data base and produce relevant reports on training activity and evaluations.
You will monitor compliance to all elements of the Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle V3 and will retain oversight of all ongoing QI projects. You will lead on the collation of appropriate evidence for the Clinical Negligence Scheme Trust (CNST) submission.
As Fetal Monitoring Lead you will be responsible for improving standards of fetal heart monitoring, interpretation, escalation, education and appropriate management of care within the service in all settings.
To lead on multi-disciplinary training at SWFT Maternity Services.
To provide strong, visible and effective clinical and managerial leadership as part of the maternity senior leaders team.
To contribute the multi-disciplinary clinical audit and governance activities.
To assist with the review of published evidence including relevant national, regional and local reports.
Maintain accurate records on the Trust training database.
Main duties of the job
To be the Service lead for Saving Babies Lives and support the safe and effective care of women and babies with the maternity services.
To lead on the improving the standard of intrapartum risk assessment and fetal monitoring, in accordance with element 4 of the Saving Babies' Lives Care Bundle (Version 3): Effective fetal monitoring during labour. To include Fresh Eyes and Fresh Ears processes and compliance.
The aim of this role and Programme is to build on the current practice of achieving healthy birth outcomes for babies who are born at South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust.
Escalate concerns and issues as they arise, particularly in where patient safety is a risk.
To work with the MDT to plan, develop and facilitate a programme of learning to achieve better birth outcomes for babies born.
Provide hands on clinical care where practicable. For example providing antenatal and postnatal care within the ward environment or undertaking 1:1 care in labour.

The post holder will lead and facilitate a Programme aimed at equipping midwives and obstetricians to increase their knowledge and competence in identifying fetal well-being, potential fetal compromise and actual fetal compromise in all clinical settings and improve clinical decision making.
Develop staffs awareness in recognizing factors that could contribute to misinterpretation of cardiotocography (CTGs) and impaired clinical decision making.
Ensure staff are assessing fetal well-being in the context of the woman's health, pregnancy, gestation and stage of labour.
Develop midwives' competence in undertaking intelligent intermittent auscultation of the fetal heart in low risk women as per the Trust and NICE guidelines. Ensure staff can intelligently auscultate the fetal heart in labour in the midwifery led unit and at home, and increase confidence in staff in auscultating the fetal heart intermittently with the use of Fresh Ears process.
Support staff in enhancing their skills in reducing risk within clinical practice.
Take a lead role in supporting the development of a safety culture within the context of resource constraints and multiple conflicting priorities.
Facilitate staff in developing and applying reflective practice skills.
Review, develop and support with current training packages and educational resources. In partnership with the Practice Development Midwife, Obstetricians, HEIs and local training and education boards/ networks; develop creative ways of learning by building on what currently works well and be innovative in using opportunities and different methods/ways to improve learning.
Work in collaboration with all grades and specialties to ensure the Trust is meeting guidance and standards in relation to saving babies lives. Where standards are not being met or failing, undertake a deep dive, understand the issues and undertake QI projects to improve compliance.
To report and provide constructive feedback on a regular basis, whilst identifying and disseminating learning from audits, outcomes, practice and teaching sessions.
Working to continue to provide comprehensive training and competency testing to give assurance that all staff responsible for fetal assessment and wellbeing are competent.
Clinical Practice
Ensure that all midwives and obstetricians undertake the competency test in assessing fetal wellbeing.
Provide teaching and support for staff who need to repeat the competency test.
Lead CTG workshops, maintaining attendance registers to ensure compliance for midwives and medical staff. Disseminate learning which emerges from workshops.
Take a lead role in auditing and incident reviewing, working with the fetal monitoring lead obstetrician to identify learning and themes.
Use findings of such cases for reflective practice sessions.
Use every opportunity to facilitate teaching, learning and reflection within the clinical area.
To communicate highly sensitive and complex information to women and their families clearly explaining the benefits and risks of different care approaches and the alternatives available recognising barriers to acceptance.
To uphold these standards and support midwives in achieving them.
Represent the Trust on external professional groups and network with colleagues from other organisations as appropriate.
