      ABOUT THE ROLE?

      What you’ll do

      The Scientific Compute Platform provides the compute power and a suite of applications that drive AstraZeneca’s drug discovery pipeline. Used by thousands of scientists globally it is an innovative high - performance compute capability designed to meet the most challenging of workloads in R&D.

      We are seeking a leader to join R&D IT and own the Platform – strategically and operationally – increasing its impact and utilisation to accelerate the discovery of drugs and their delivery to patients.

      You will….

      • Lead and have overall accountability for the Scientific Compute Platform.

      • Define and implement a strategy for the Platform that anticipates and meets the current and future needs of AstraZeneca’s scientific community.

      • Lead, build and develop a distributed team of high performance compute (HPC) specialists with roles covering systems and infrastructure, application engineering, service and operations and product management.

      • Own the overall strategy for HPC within R&D IT. This includes the Scientific Compute Platform as well other on-premise and cloud Data & AI Platforms across the R&D organisation. Define how on-premise and cloud compute should work together optimally and ensure this is seen as a single ecosystem to users in R&D.

      • Build and develop productive relationships with AstraZeneca senior scientific leaders and science communities to develop an intimate understanding of their use cases and needs. Use this insight to shape the direction of the platform. Balance competing demands effectively.

      • Define and continuously improve the Platform operating model, to ensure increasingly quality, cost-effectiveness and efficiency over time.

      • Foster links with HPC communities in industry and academics for standard methodologies and trends making sure that the future direction of travel is not only driven by internal demands.

      ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED?

      Essential for the role

      • An expert in high - performance compute – both on-premise and cloud.
      • Experience in working in a complex global organisation – leading a distributed team and proactively managing an extensive network of global customers.
      • Able to establish, communicate, influence and inspire people around a vision for high - performance compute.
      • Operate effectively in a matrix environment – getting things done through collaboration with other teams as well as through line managed resources.
      • Experience of leading, managing and motivating a large team of technical experts across multiple locations.
      • Definition and implementation of IT delivery and service operating models – with a focus on continuous improvement of delivery practices and user experience.

      Desirable for the role

      • Experience in life sciences and healthcare.
