Prepare journal entries in accordance with Canadian Public Sector Accounting Standards and the organization’s policies and procedures, with complete and accurate support.
Reconcile accounts, investigate irregularities, and provide recommended solution.
Respond to Audit Requests by both preparing analysis and communicating the work performed to internal and/or external auditors.
Complete required regulatory and ad hoc reporting.
Assist with preparation of financial statements.
Identify opportunities to improve tools, procedures, and the internal control framework, and collaborate on solutions.
Complete trend analysis where applicable and take the lead on Policy/Procedure/Note to File documentation, tool development, communications and provide leadership on other various projects.
Have expert knowledge of Workday functionality in respective area; seek to continually learn new features to enhance effectiveness or efficiency.
Collaborate with colleagues, both within Finance and within the broader Ontario Health population on matters related to areas of responsibilities.
Provide exemplary customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
Provide accounting advice based on knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and/or best practices experience or research.
Be a mentor to other staff members.
Perform other duties within the functional area as assigned.
Be attentive and apply professional skepticism to areas of fraud risk and abide by the internal controls designed to prevent and detect fraudulent activity. Report any actual, alleged, or suspected fraud in accordance with procedures, and report any believed gaps in internal controls to management.
Lead the disbursement of approximately $4B in annual payments to transfer payment recipients in accordance with fully executed agreements and established payment criteria. Analyze and validate prepared payment files, or by preparing the payment files, and load them into Workday.
Use the highest standards and practices to ensure that prepared payments are complete and accurate and are compliant with policies, practices, and Directives.
Apply excellent financial and business judgement skills and professional skepticism.
Be independent and proactive in identifying issues or discrepancies, recommend solutions and areas of improvement. Research and actively partake in implementation of new Workday functionaries within the area of responsibilities.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, or related fields
Completion or near completion of Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation
Strong finance background, with 3 years of experience in accounting, reporting and analysis
Knowledge within area of responsibility including legislation, MOH requirements, Public Sector Accounting Standards, OH policies and procedures and auditor requirements
Experience in Workday Financials is considered an asset
Competent in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel
Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills, accuracy, and organization
Demonstrated initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement and making recommendations to management
Ability to think critically, set priorities, solve problems and resolve conflicts in a timely and efficient manner
Effective communication, interpersonal, and time-management skills
High standards of ethics and confidentiality to handle sensitive information
Self-starter with a strong sense of personal accountability and ownership in their work
Ability to carry out assigned projects to completion with minimal supervision
Ability to exercise good judgement, show initiative, and be proactive

As an integral member of the Finance team and reporting to the Finance Manager, the Senior Financial Accountant supports specific financial accounting functions for the organization, spanning Banking and Treasury, Payables, Capital Assets, Payroll, Accounting and Reporting for an organization with complexity of $3B+ in expenditure and nearly 3,000 unionized and non-unionized employees. Senior Financial Accountants have responsibility for their area of focus to prepare journal entries, account reconciliations and ad hoc analysis. The Accountant responds to inquiries of internal or external stakeholders and ensures that support is complete and accurate. They are detail oriented, take initiative, identify issues and solutions, and have effective communication skills. They also take the lead in Policy/Procedure documentation, communications and provide leadership in various projects as well as providing mentorship to other staff members.
