- Degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Health & Safety, Law, Environmental Management, Science, Engineering)
- NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety (or equivalent eligible for CMIOSH)
- Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH)
- Formal qualification in teaching/training and development
- Experience as a Health and Safety Advisor within the NHS or a similarly complex organisation
- Development and delivery of training packages for staff and leaders
- Experience undertaking complex investigations following serious incidents
- Computer literate
- Supervisory or line management experience
- Experience working with the HSE or other enforcement bodies
- Self-motivated and able to motivate others
- Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills
- Experience using monitoring/measuring equipment
- Experience of auditing
- Numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills

Main duties of the job
As Senior Health and Safety Advisor, youll take on a varied and rewarding role with real influence. Youll:
Act as deputy to the Head of Health and Safety, providing leadership and support across the Trust
Guide and support the Health and Safety Advisor and lead on key policy areas
Lead investigations into serious incidents, producing clear, evidence-based reports with practical recommendations
Work closely with departments to strengthen local safety practices and build confidence in managing risk
Develop and implement health and safety policies, procedures and audits that support long-term improvement
Design, deliver and evaluate engaging training for staff across all disciplines and levels
Collaborate with Estates, Occupational Health, Risk Management and clinical services
Represent the Trust at internal governance forums and regional safety groups

This is a pivotal and rewarding role at the heart of the Trusts Health and Safety Team. As Senior Health and Safety Advisor, you will support the Head of Health and Safety in promoting a proactive, values-led safety culture across Leeds Teaching Hospitals. Youll provide trusted advice to staff and managers, contribute to the development of policy, and help services meet their responsibilities in a complex and fast-paced healthcare setting.
You will lead on defined areas of health and safety, support and guide the Health and Safety Advisor, and play a key role in coordinating the Trusts annual health and safety audit programme. This includes working closely with departments to review their practices, offer clear, practical advice, and support meaningful local improvements.
You will also contribute to incident reviews, often working alongside clinical and operational leaders, to ensure learning is shared and safety strengthened. Youll help design and deliver training, represent the team in Trust-wide meetings, and build collaborative relationships with departments including Estates, Risk Management and Occupational Health.
Key aspects of the role include:
Developing and maintaining health and safety policies and procedures
Supporting departments and services to manage their own local risks
Leading and contributing to reviews of health and safety incidents
Helping coordinate audit activities and sharing good practice across the Trust
Delivering and evaluating health and safety training
Representing the Health and Safety Team in governance forums and staff networks
