- Conducting epidemiological and statistical analysis and carrying out research to gain a deeper understanding of the health of the Denver community, including the distribution and determinants of disease in populations, with the overall goal of addressing health inequities and improving population health.
- Applying the principles and best practices for identifying, analyzing, and interpreting health disparities and inequities in a diverse community using epidemiological approaches.
- Working with all divisions to proactively identify needs and opportunities for population health analysis and related studies that could help guide future program priorities, planning, and evaluation
- Designing and executing experiments or epidemiological studies to address those needs, communicating findings, and supporting programs in making evidence-based decisions supported by those findings.
- Creating engaging tools to communicate and display epidemiological findings, including interactive data dashboards, narrative story maps, and written reports. These projects will be completed with additional technical support from other members of the Data Science team when needed.
- Serving as the internal and department-wide keeper of—and expert on—local, state, federal and other public health datasets, such as BRFFS, NSSP ESSENCE, PLACES, CEDRS, CIIS, the Colorado Health Access Survey, Healthy Kids Colorado, Healthy People 2030, Colorado Tobacco and Behaviors Survey, CoHID, CHORDS, SAMHSA data, etc. This will include proactively identifying ways DDPHE can use these data to guide decision-making, as well as responding to data and analysis requests.
- Fulfilling data requests for internal and external partners and responding to media requests, as needed
- Collaborating with the team to identify additional grant opportunities relating to expansion of DDPHE’s population health work
- Along with all department staff, this position will actively participate on an emergency preparedness and response team to support DDPHE’s responsibilities outlined in the City’s Emergency Operations Plan. This may require being ‘on-call’ from time to time to help respond to emergencies. Additional training commensurate with assigned duties will be provided.

- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a public health-related field (Public Health, Epidemiology, Biological Sciences, Biostatistics, etc.), or a quantitative or technical field (Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, etc.) with additional study or work experience in public health.
- Experience in a population health epidemiology role within a local, state or federal position involving conducting research and/or statistical analysis to gain insights into community-level health indicators
- Extensive knowledge and deep understanding of the social determinants of health, principles of health equity, and how these factors affect health outcomes in various populations within a broader community
- One or more published academic papers or similar experience sharing your research with the broader public health community, such as through conference presentations, webinars, etc.
- Knowledge of current quantitative research design and primary data collection methods including basic survey design; data cleaning and data management methods for large and small datasets, and methods for primary and secondary data analysis
- Knowledge of epidemiological principles, techniques, practices, and procedures as related to population health assessment and data interpretation to conduct ongoing analysis of community health data for the purposes of surveillance and community health assessment
- The ability to work independently and with initiative, manage and execute complex projects in a leadership role, and meet deadlines
- The ability to work with and analyze large data sets, including writing queries, cleaning, and validating data, conducting analyses, and creating visualizations to report your findings
- Experience utilizing Microsoft PowerBI, Tableau or other analytics/visualization tools
- Experience with programming languages and tools used for data engineering and analysis (SQL, Python, R/R Studio, STATA, SAS, etc.) and/or the interest and aptitude to build programming skills as required
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to present analytical findings in a concise and engaging way, both written and in person, especially to audiences who may have a range of comfort levels with data and analysis
- A commitment to public service, equity, and a desire to work towards improved health for all members of our Denver community
- Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Business Administration, or other related field.
- Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of data analytics experience.
- By position, three (3) years of audit experience or combination of audit and data analytics.
- Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.

The SSBO team has an opening for a Senior Population Health Epidemiologist. This position will hold a unique role within the department and will be tasked with envisioning and building a new Population Health Epidemiology program within the city. This will include applying epidemiological and statistical methods to help better understand the distribution and determinants of health outcomes in the Denver community, including chronic diseases, communicable diseases, behavioral risk factors, and other factors contributing to health disparities. This individual’s research and findings will be used to guide department-wide priorities and decision-making, as well as planning and evaluation at the program level.
The Senior Population Health Epidemiologist will be housed within the Epidemiology, Disease Intervention, and Data Science section. Together, these teams support analytical, data-driven, and research-focused functions at the department-wide level, including:
