Position Summary
The incumbent of this position is responsible for performing duties as it pertains to administrative and onsite support for the regional Supervisor and Road Test Examiners. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining a clear line of communication with Service Center’s as it relates to the Road Test Department and our public. The incumbent is required to ensure policies and procedures comply with the requirements of the Road Test Department. The incumbent must have outstanding customer service and excellent communication skills.
The incumbent of this position is responsible for performing the following duties: Senior Examiners are to act as a back-up support to the regional Supervisor. Senior Examiners are to conduct administrative tasks as requested by management, establish reports, collect information and document accordingly as requested by the Supervisor. Senior Examiners are to monitor and procure office supplies as it relates to the Road Test Program. Senior Examiners are to serve and train new hires for the position of Road Test Examiner. Senior Examiners are to provide floating coverage for regional exams. Senior Examiners will serve as the first point of contact for onsite complaints to deescalate, document and provide retesting when applicable. Senior Examiners are to conduct Interlock and Medical Competency exams for applicants equipped with vehicles that do not fall under the public service center roster requirements. Senior Examiners are to assist in maintaining avenues of branch support for applicants that arrive unprepared to test and/or applicants that may need to return. Senior Examiners are to ensure that the regional exams are completed and posted at the close of day and that rosters are scanned and submitted to Supervisors daily.
Duties and Responsibilities
· The Senior Examiner is responsible for additional duties pertaining to Road Test Examiner. Senior Examiners are to instruct and conduct exams evaluating skills and ability to operate Class D automobiles. Senior Examiners will monitor safe driving practices utilizing the rules of the road, hand signals, engaging and disengaging the engine, starting and stopping, acceleration and breaking, parallel parking, backing fifty-feet, proper speed and steering through turns, proper hill parking, three-point turns, safely handling an intersection, compliance with traffic signs and lights and proper use of indicators to communicate their direction. Senior Examiners will ensure that the applicant uses good driving sense, including adjustment to a proper seated position, both hands placed on the wheel, maintain lane placement, check safety/blind spots and ability to adjust to lane change when/if needed. Senior Examiners will further ensure that the applicant, when required yields and adequately execute right-of-way, maintains a safe driving distance, adjusts to inclement weather and/or obstructions and is aware of actions apart from their own with other occupants of the road, pedestrians, etc.
· Senior Examiners will perform a visual exam in a controlled exam site for Class M designations. Senior Examiners will instruct the applicant to perform specific driving functions and evaluate the applicant’s skill and ability. Senior Examiners in addition to verifying the proper registration, insurance (if needed) and acceptable inspection status must verify that the applicant’s helmet meets the DOT requirements for road safety. Senior Examiners will observe an applicant’s ability to perform hand signals while in motion, navigation through figure-eight’s and 360-degree circles in both directions. Senior Examiners will monitor the applicant’s ability to control acceleration, deceleration, and handling. The applicant must maintain proper balance without touching their foot on the pavement, fish-tailing and/or dropping.
· When communication is compromised between the Senior Examiner and the applicant due to hearing impairment or a language barrier, the Senior Examiner will communicate with the applicant through an interpreter to explain the elements of the exam(s).
· Senior Examiners will also perform Ignition Interlock Exams for Class D. All facets of the Ignition interlock exam will include the above listed Class D criteria and include the visual witnessing of the applicant starting their vehicle with the IID device and if required performed again through the duration of the exam.
· Medical Affairs Board, “MAB” Competency Road exams will also be evaluated using the above listed Class D exam. Senior Examiners will ensure that the applicant either takes an eye-exam or submits proper medical screening to substitute, should one be required. Senior Examiners will evaluate if an applicant is medically qualified to operate a motor vehicle safely. Senior Examiners are required at the completion of all MAB exams to scan the MAB paperwork including the application, DL100 results and any further required documents to the MAD as well as currier in a copy to the MAB and retain an additional copy in the service center where the exam was performed.
· Senior Examiners are responsible for receiving required documents, signatures and any supporting paperwork presented by the applicant. Senior Examiners are responsible for ensuring the applicant’s vehicle/motorized designation meets the state’s requirements for registration and insured coverage. Senior Examiners are responsible for ensuring any alternate vehicles presented have the proper credentials required to test with.
· Senior Examiners are responsible for record keeping information for class D & M applications, score sheets, data entry of road test results. Senior Examiners are responsible for the grading of their own exams unless otherwise specified. Should examiners be sharing a roster with another examiner(s), the examiner is responsible for indicating which exams specifically were conducted by themself. Senior Examiners are further required to submit any incident reports at the close of business day on the day of reported incident. Incident reports must be fully documented with reference numbers, contact information and a complete and thorough timeline of all events.
· Senior Examiners are responsible for the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with the applicant. Senior Examiners are responsible for demonstrating good/active listening skills, treating the applicant as well as fellow co-workers and individuals interacted with during the workday with common curtesy and respect.
**These positions will be regional with locations included in Taunton, Worcester, Chicopee, Lawrence, Braintree**
Applicant must have at least 2 years’ experience conducting road tests.

I. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in business administration, business management or public administration may be substituted for the required experience. *
II. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major other than in business administration, business management or public administration may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience. *
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
