Job Description
- Req#: 526493
- Students are expected to devote three full days per week to the field placement for a total of 24 hours a week.
- Placement hours are available Monday through Friday 8 am-5 pm. We are not able to accommodate weekend or evening hours at this time. The specific three days that you attend can be determined with your supervisor based on your class schedule. Attendance at the monthly Social Work Administration Meeting (Second Tuesday of the month from 12:00 – 12:50) is highly encouraged.
- Our field practicum experience covers two full semesters, Fall 2024 and Spring 2025. We expect students to start their internship hours at the end of August 2024 and remain in their internship until the end of April 2025.
- During the winter break we ask that students take no more than 10 consecutive days off from the placement to ensure continuity of care for patients they are working with.
- During other school holidays (i.e. Spring Break) students may take the full week long break from their internship.
- Our social work internships provide on-the-job experience in clinical social work. Interns receive intensive supervision including weekly individual supervision and regular meetings with other social workers and social work trainees.
- Support is also offered via an intern specific process group led by a Menninger clinician, 1 hour each week.
- Students will also take part in a DBT skills coaching didactic. On a referral basis, students will be given the opportunity to provide direct service in the form of DBT skills coaching sessions to patients. Interns attend team meetings, patient rounds, family sessions, and group therapy sessions.
- As part of the placement students will interview patients and family members and develop psychosocial assessments.
- As appropriate, interns co-facilitate task-oriented groups.
- Additional opportunities for exploring more specific training in the treatment and assessment of substance use disorders and eating disorders may also be available.
- Students may also be asked to work directly on discharge planning and continuity-of-care issues with patients and their families.
- In addition, interns are encouraged to attend regular provided learning opportunities at the clinic.
- Prior to starting the internship, you will have to complete our new-employee screening process which includes providing vaccine records, drug screening, a TB test, and a full background check conducted by a third-party vendor.
- An application does not guarantee an interview. Your application will be reviewed, and we will email you should you be offered a virtual interview.
- Interested students from multiple Graduate Social Work programs will be interviewed during the Spring of 2024 by the Director of Clinician Services and Associate Director of Social Work Internships.
- Acceptance for practicum at The Menninger Clinic does not guarantee you will be interning in your requested treatment program but every effort will be made to take into account students learning goals and professional interests. Exact program placement within the clinic is not decided on until the Summer of 2024 when staffing, supervisor, and program availability is confirmed.
- If you are selected to be an intern; you will meet with a panel of practicum supervisors to be paired with a supervisor and program.
