      Job summary

      This is a 10 PA appointment for a Specialty Doctor in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery.

      The post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Trauma & Orthopaedic Team, with 1.5 PAs dedicated to SPA. The post holder will provide senior clinical expertise and experience in outpatient, ward assessment and operating theatre settings.

      There will be opportunities to contribute to research and teaching.

      Main duties of the job

      The post holder will work with a team of Surgeons to provide inpatient care for trauma patients across the 2 hospital sites within the city and help to ensure the smooth running of the Trauma & Orthopaedic departments

      The service will include:

      Fracture Clinics

      Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery

      Optional weekend hip lists

      Ward rounds and patient reviews - LGI and SJUH outreach

      Support to Junior Doctors

      Full in house educational and clinical supervision and mentoring package

      Access to participate in ongoing departmental research and audit presentations

      Opportunities to teach undergraduates

      Access to clinical governance meetings

      Elective clinics and operating lists - dependent on team allocation

      Registrar On call rota

      Applicants should have established skills in Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery.

      Applicants should have a minimum of 4 years previous experience in Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery at ST3 level or above, current ATLS certification and must have full MRCS or equivalent.

      Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential. Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

      Job responsibilities

      All Trauma patients are admitted to the Leeds General Infirmary. The Trauma referral base is from the whole of the Yorkshire Region, a population of approximately 3.5 million. Particular specialist services provided are open fractures, pelvic and acetabular reconstruction, post-injury limb reconstruction and complex fracture work. This post is designed to support our Trauma service.

      A regional service is provided for acute trauma and post-traumatic reconstructive surgery, as well as General Elective Orthopaedic services for hand and wrist and paediatric surgery at the LGI. A general Elective Orthopaedic service currently provides complex and revision lower limb arthroplasty, upper limb, knee, foot, and ankle surgery at Chapel Allerton Hospital.

      Leeds General Infirmary has three orthopaedic wards, one Major Trauma ward, one paediatric ward including two paediatric HDU beds, one spinal surgery ward, and a six-bedded HOBS unit shared with plastic surgery. Three trauma theatres run all-day lists every day of the week. All trauma outpatients are seen in a dedicated fracture clinic with supporting radiology facilities.

      OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

      To contribute directly to patient care by, for example, reviewing patients, organising investigations and acting

      on results, initiating and changing treatment, and speaking to and involving patients in their care and

      management and keeping patients and their relatives/carers updated about their clinical progress.

      To perform routine trauma surgery at Leeds General Infirmary, leading the theatre team in a safe and

      productive manner.

      To provide outreach orthopaedic advice and clinical expertise to the other hospitals of the LTHT, mainly to the St James University Hospital.

      To undertake essential administrative duties, including prescribing, writing electronic discharge letters, and liaising with colleagues in primary care to facilitate safe and appropriate discharges.

      To support specialist and fracture clinics

      To contribute to a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, working collaboratively with a large team of allied healthcare professionals, including the Early Discharge Assessment Team, specialist nurses and physiotherapists.

      Participate in the registrar on-call rota.
