- Maintain, establish, and cultivate relationships with Members of Congress and relevant personal office and Committee staff to create value-add opportunities that raise the company’s visibility in Washington, DC, and promote Vertex’s public policy objectives.
- Advance Vertex’s public policy agenda with Congress.
- Work closely with colleagues in Public Affairs Department (Policy & Alliance Development, State Government Affairs & Grassroots, and Community Affairs) to advance Public Affairs and Corporate goals.
- Monitor legislation and identify and flag substantive policy and political opportunities and risks to the company’s business.
- Provide political and strategic legislative expertise on activities critical to achieving corporate objectives and serving on various internal work groups.
- Gain a deep understanding of Vertex’s medicines, technology, and the patients we serve and develop the capability to communicate the virtuous nature of Vertex’s business model.
- Substantive experience with the federal legislative process for healthcare policy and strong understanding of the political context in which the biopharmaceutical industry operates.
- Understanding of policies fundamental to ensuring patients have access to the medicines of today and tomorrow.
- Strong network of relationships in Congress.
- Excellent judgment to make decisions on complex business and healthcare policy issues, and act based on what is in the best interest of the company and patients.
- Team-oriented, innovative, energetic, entrepreneurial, and resourceful.
- Willing to offer opinions, suggestions, and judgments that are supported by sound logic.
Job Description
General Summary:
The Federal Government Affairs Associate Director will be responsible for shaping and executing the federal government affairs strategy in support of Vertex’s public policy and political objectives which support the company’s business objectives. This position will work collaboratively within the Federal Government Affairs team and the broader US Public Affairs Department, including Policy and Alliance Development and State Government Affairs and Grassroots.
