- Proactively identify new market opportunities and product offerings as well as support cross-sell opportunities by identifying client needs;
- Maintain product Line specific pricing policies and authorities within the product line;
- Set underwriting standards, assigning accounts, encouraging collaboration;
- Develop and implement customer-oriented strategies for Retail:
- Develop and maintain key retail and broker relationships to foster mutually beneficial goals;
- Prepare, coordinate and execute product line specific training for underwriters and support staff;
- Review and approve large submissions beyond assigned authority levels;
- Transmit concerns/feedback to Senior Leadership regarding product, underwriting and claims concerns based on interactions with management, underwriters and producers;
- Work with Retail Marketing teams to target producers as well as manage client relationships;
- Assist with the development of new business opportunities in retail.
- Minimum of 8 - 15 years of underwriting expertise with at least 5 - 10 years of underwriting experience within dedicated product line(s);
- Strategic experience managing multiple product lines;
- Undergraduate degree required;
- Graduate degree and/or industry designations would be a definite plus;
- Minimum of 8 years of proven success in leading a team;
- Experience leading, developing and recruiting talent
- Superior verbal and written communication skills;
- Collaborative management style;
- High energy, pro-active self-starter; someone with a strong sense of urgency;
- Demonstrated ability in setting and meeting objectives and getting peers and subordinates to “buy in” through superior influencing skills;
- Flexible and spontaneous qualities are key elements to the success of this position;
- Interpersonal skills necessary to achieve desired goals and to interact effectively as well as a high level of confidence, integrity, energy and enthusiasm, executive presence and a personality that fits the “Markel Style.
- Ability to travel 25%.

The primary purpose of this position is to lead and implement the strategic development and execution of organizational goals and objectives for excess, environmental and healthcare products. Provide leadership, direction and support to underwriting team. Is responsible for underwriting, profitability, growth and retention of new and renewal business that is consistent with underwriting strategies. Ensure effective execution of best practices. In conjunction with PLL Leadership, delegate underwriting authority to staff via letters of authority; monitor and revise as appropriate. Ensure a quality underwriting work product is produced consistent with letters of authority, underwriting strategy, standards and process. Provide coaching and training for underwriting staff based on results of underwriting audit review. Work with Regional and Operations leaders to ensure all processing and service standards are met. Communicate, identified agency production, training or quality issues to Marketing. Develop and maintain relationships with internal resources (Actuarial, Product Development, Claims, IT, etc.) to coordinate services to customers.Job Description

Pay information:
The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The base salary range for the Sr. Director position is $175k - $225k/year with a 55% bonus potential, Managing Director position is $200k - $300k/year with a 50% cash bonus potential, 35% LTI.
