- To provide leadership in the implementation of the SRCE Safety Program;
- Advise managers, supervisors and employees regarding SRCE’s Safety Program and relevant legislation;
- Develop and lead safety initiatives and prevention programs;
- Perform and follow-up OHS audits, compile reports for the Director of Operations and Director of Human Resources as required;
- Recommend appropriate training as required by legislation, facilitate training programs and workshops as required;
- Support administration with site inspections, hazard assessments, table top exercises, and emergency management drills;
- Deliver new hire orientations;
- Act as system administrator for online Vector training database;
- To create safe work practices and train employees;
- Monitor OHS activities for contractors during construction and renovation projects - audit contractor safety plans, training records and complete site inspections;
- Manage work permit procedures (confined space, hot works);
- Manage Nova Scotia Fire Safety Program & training of Principals;
- Manage Provincial Fume Hood Safety Program & training of teachers;
- Manage Provincial Dust Collector Safety Program & training of teachers;
- Manage compliance testing, reporting and follow-up for radon, water, asbestos;
- Manage indoor air quality investigations, reporting & remediation;
- Conduct workplace inspections/observations;
- Provide assistance to Transportation department with bus incidents & investigations;
- Manage employee injury reporting database, investigations & implement corrective actions;
- Facilitate injury claims management by ensuring WCB Injury Reporting, assist and support HR with return to work program;
- Training (First Aid, Fall Protection, Confined Space, Forklift, AWP) as well as in-house training for all staff (CUPE, NSTU, non-union) WHMIS, fire safety, classroom safety, violence in the workplace, safety orientations, as well as OHS safety training for students in various programs throughout the SRCE and act as administrator for online Vector Solutions training program;
- Provide security advice to school administration;
- Act as liaison between SRCE and school JOHS Committees and School Advisory Committees;
- Provide direction to Building Operator Committee;
- Sit as member on provincial fire safety committee, provincial safety for schools committee, and other committees as required;
- To undertake such other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Human Resources.
- Minimum five years’ experience working in the Occupational Health & Safety field.
- Completion of an industry accredited OHS/HSE certification (ie. CSA, NCSO, CRPS, NEBOSH).
- Completion of an Occupational Health & Safety Certificate, Diploma or Degree program from a post- secondary institution.
- Knowledge of industry safety principles, practices and legislation.
- Ability to work independently and display creativity, exercise good judgement, demonstrate initiative and have excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries.
- Good knowledge of PC operations and software (word processing, spreadsheets, power point).
- Exceptional time management and organizational skills.
- Excellent problem solving and decision making skills.
- Human Resource experience.

The Strait Regional Centre for Education, with the support of approximately 1,050 employees, works diligently to achieve its mission “to empower our children and youth, within safe, equitable and inclusive environments to embrace a changing world as responsible, contributing and successful lifelong learners.” In 2022-2023, the SRCE operates 20 schools with approximately 5,931 students; and approximately 369 children are attending pre-primary programs at 14 school locations. Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s jurisdiction encompasses the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond, an area of approximately 11,000 square kilometres with a population of 53,742 (Census 2021).

Manager, Occupational Health & Safety
Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the Manager of OHS has the primary role of implementing and operationalizing the Strait Regional Centre for Education’s Safety Program. The aim of this role is to utilize professional judgement in assessing risk, reviewing work practices, and determining the best practice to achieve zero injuries, incidents and compliance with all applicable regulatory standards.
