      Staff Bioinformatics Scientist – Multi-omics Technical Lead

      Cambridge - Onsite/Hub and Hybrid or Europe remote

      We have an exciting new opportunity for a Staff Bioinformatics Scientist to join our Multiomics Bioinformatics organization and will support the development of Illumina’s portfolio of multiomic assays, library preps, and associated software.

      The Role

      The Multiomics Bioinformatics organization supports products spanning epigenetics, transcriptomics, and proteomics. The Staff Bioinformatics Scientist will be responsible for developing novel algorithms and bioinformatics methods to extract biological meaning from Illumina’s growing multi-omic product portfolio. They will be responsible for designing and implementing solutions in the form of model design and software as well as collaborating with others to do so in a team-focused workflow. They will be responsible for helping to define and drive the success of the complete product, including defining requirements, assessing accuracy, streamlining customer experience, enabling end-user applications and proposing novel research directions. They will have a strong background in computer science, algorithms, statistics, and/or digital signal processing in addition to expertise in genomics, next generation sequencing, and a broad ecosystem of related assays and biotechnologies. The ideal candidate will have a track record of both innovative and pragmatic bioinformatics methods development and delivery. In addition to strong bioinformatics and programming skills, this position requires a high degree of initiative and cross-functional collaboration, as well as a thorough understanding of the product development process.

      Responsibilities:

      • Design, prototype and implement innovative computational and/or statistical algorithms to extract meaningful biological signal from multi-omic assays.
      • Implement algorithms in production-grade C++ software.
      • Represent bioinformatics in a product development team, establish work priorities and communicate / delegate tasks to other sub-team members as needed.
      • Work cross-functionally with leaders from product management, assay development, and software engineering to define strategy and roadmap for multiomics methods and customer facing software
      • Stay current on latest publications and relevant research and identify established methods that should be incorporated into method development.
      • Submit invention disclosures or innovative ideas for technology, processes and products
      • Mentor peers and supporting scientists, engineers on technical skills in one's area of expertise

      Key skill requirements:

      • Expertise in genomics and experience with analyzing error modes and actionable signal in multi-omic data sets
      • Expertise in algorithms for NGS secondary analysis: Mapping-Alignment and Variant Calling
      • Expertise in high-performance software development using C++/C or similar languages
      • Experience with Unix/Linux environments, including shell scripting and High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster usage
      • Familiarity with common bioinformatics pipelines and data formats
      • Solid understanding of statistical and biological concepts

      Desired experience:

      • Experience with Multiomics assays including: epigenetics, methylation, or scRNA
      • Familiarity with collaboration and product development tools (confluence, JIRA, JAMA)
      • Familiarity with next-generation sequencing technologies
      • Strong communication skills and a history of collaboration with teams from diverse background

      Education requirements:

      Masters/PhD in bioinformatics, computer science, data science, engineering, mathematics or equivalent

      Typically requires a minimum of 6 years of related experience with a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3+ years of experience; or equivalent experience
