      Join our Museum Access & Equity department and Kitty Andersen Youth Science Center (KAYSC) as a STEM Justice Community Collaborator Intern! The purpose of this internship is to support the Science Museum of Minnesota's community engagement efforts by preparing and facilitating interactive science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activities and representing the museum at community events throughout the Twin Cities metro area, with a focus on connecting with communities underrepresented in STEM careers. Interns will explore the intersection of social justice and STEM content areas, including: media/technology, environmental studies, biological sciences/public health, or engineering/design.

      Job Duties and Responsibilities:

      • Build and strengthen partnerships with community organizations and members to increase community impact.
      • Participate in planning the Science Museum's presence at community events.
      • Research STEM and social justice content that relates to Twin Cities communities.
      • Create and facilitate hands-on STEM activities for youth and families at community events and at the Science Museum.
      • Learn different methods of evaluation and research to help gather data and connect with community members.
      • Participate in professional development training and career exploration.
      • Document your experience and share with other staff.
      • Meet weekly to plan for events, research and develop activities, document facilitation plans, and reflect after events.
      • Model behavior expectations and help create a positive, inclusive learning environment.
      • Work independently, managing projects and deadlines with limited support.
      • Performs other related duties as assigned.

          Required Competencies:

Models and advocates just, anti-racist, equity-focused, and inclusive collaborations in all of the Museum’s endeavors.
          5. Results Orientation: Focuses on providing a best-in-class experience through work outcomes by meeting personal and organizational work objectives.

          Minimum Qualifications:

          • Education: High School Diploma / GED or equivalent experience.
          • Experience:
            • Experience working with staff teams or participants from demographic backgrounds underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers.
            • Experience utilizing and teaching STEM content for academic or leisure purposes.
          • Physical Requirements: Be able to lift up to 10 lbs. and sit for long periods.
          • Work Environment: Ability to work at community events during the evenings and weekends. Travel to events throughout the Twin Cities area with personal vehicle or on public transportation. Necessary to work in all climate types.

          Preferred Qualifications:

          • Experience framing STEM content with a social justice lens.
          • Cultural competency and experience working with diverse communities.
          • Willingness to be open and respectful of all backgrounds.
          • Fluency in language(s) other than English valued (Hmong, Somali, Spanish).

          Compensation: $16.558/hour
