      BC Timber Sales (BCTS) is a unique program of the Ministry of Forests (FOR). Working collaboratively with regional and district operations, BCTS plans, develops, and auctions a substantial portion of the province’s annual available timber volume. BCTS operates as a for profit entity within a government organization. Its goal is to provide credible representative price and cost benchmark data for the Market Pricing System through auctions of timber harvested from British Columbia’s public land. BCTS operations are guided by three overarching principles, forest sector safety, reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and sustainable forest management.

      The Business Area GIS Team Lead works within the business area managing local GIS staff and providing expert advice to local management, technical and professional staff as well as stakeholders, First Nations and industry clients on the use and interpretation of corporate data set(s) to maximize the potential of GIS and related geospatial and information technologies in support of business area objectives.

      Job Requirements:
      • Diploma or degree in geographic information systems, resource management, geography or computer science or related area, or equivalent.
      • Minimum of 5 years of experience developing and managing large spatial and attribute data sets using database management tools and applications.
      • Minimum of 5 years of experience developing methodologies and performing custom geo-spatial data modelling and complex analysis and interpretations.

      Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:
      • Minimum of two years of experience providing GIS related training.
      • Operational forestry specific experience conducting advanced GIS functions.
      • Beginner to Intermediate level of Project Management knowledge.
      • Working experience with BC Timber Sales.
      • Demonstrated experience automating or scripting solutions for repetitive tasks (using tools such as Python, Model Builder, FME).
      • Over five years of forest management experience and one year of implementing/configuring/testing forest management software application.
      • Supervision experience.

      Provisos:
      • Must have and maintain a valid BC driver's licence.
      • Must be willing to travel with occasional overnighting for provincial/regional/local meetings.
      • Willing and able to complete training required to maintain currency in GIS skills and abilities.

      About this Position:
      This is a temporary opportunity until May 4, 2024. A permanent appointment may result from this temporary appointment.
      Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
      This position supports GIS work within the Chinook business area (Powell River, Chilliwack, Squamish, Daajing Giids) and can be based in any of the following BC Timber Sales offices: Burns Lake, Campbell River, Chilliwack, Dawson Creek, Fort St James, Fort St John, Hazelton, Kamloops, Mackenzie, Nelson, Port McNeill, Powell River, Prince George, Quesnel, Squamish, Terrace, Vanderhoof, Vernon, Victoria, or Williams Lake.
      An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and/or permanent vacancies.
      Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
