      The Archaeology Branch (the Branch) leads the development of legislation, policy and regulations related to the oversight, allocation and sustainable management of archaeological cultural and heritage resources throughout the province. Tasked with leading direct consultation with First Nations, the Branch functions as the provincial archaeological experts and provides ongoing policy interpretation, advice and information to government. The work involves significant inter-agency, inter-governmental, First Nations, industry, and community partnership efforts.

      The Archaeology Branch is responsible for the protection, conservation, and appreciation of British Columbia’s unique archaeological resources in accordance with the Heritage Conservation Act (HCA). In accordance with the HCA, the Archaeology Branch adjudicates applications for permits which, if issued, allow for archaeological studies or for alterations to protected archaeological sites, under certain terms and conditions and subject to consultation with First Nations. The Branch also maintains the Provincial Heritage Register of all known archaeological heritage sites and objects, oversees access to archaeological information, develops policy, and supports and advances negotiations with First Nations.

      The purpose of this position is to provide senior-level advice to clients and First Nations regarding the administration of Heritage Conservation Act permits, directs work as required, and addresses controversial, political, or complex issues regarding archaeological resource management.

      Job Requirements:

      • BA or BSc in Archaeology, OR
      • BA in Anthropology with a specialization in archaeology, OR
      • A Master’s degree (or higher) in Archaeology or Anthropology with a specialization in archaeology, or a related field. Preference many be given to applicants with an equivalent combination of post-graduate training and experience*, OR
      • An equivalent combination of education and/or training and related experience* may be considered.

      *Related experience includes the following:

      • Minimum 5 years of experience in archaeological resource management, specifically a combination of fieldwork, reporting, liaison with Indigenous organizations and regulatory bodies.
      • Experience interpreting and applying archaeological and cultural resource management legislation and/or policy.
      • Experience leading others.
      • Experience providing briefings and recommendations to senior management.

      Preference may be given to applicants with 1 or more of the following:

      • Who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit)
      • Specialized or advanced experience with archeology, archeological resource management and British Columbia prehistory.
      • 5 or more years of experience supervising, leading, coaching, and/or mentoring staff in a supportive manner.
      • 5 or more years of experience in Indigenous consultation and engagement processes on archaeological management issues.
