      Description

      The State Compensation Insurance Fund is seeking to hire a Legal student assistant. Our Legal Student Assistant Program provides on-the-job training in the area of Workers' Compensation law. With 17 legal departments throughout California, we deliver superior outcomes for injured employees and the employers we serve by providing consistent quality work in paying what we owe, defending what we don't, and doing it with a great sense of urgency.

      Conditions of Employment

      This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

      Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department.

      UEI does not allow students to hold more than one UEI Job at a time, or work in more than one account per pay period. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant positing should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week's notice.

      UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position, you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California.

      Prerequisites

      Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

      Students must be enrolled at a minimum in four-semester units or six-quarter units for graduate students.

      Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.

      Work Schedule

      Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. Final work schedule to be determined by supervisor.

      Additional Work Schedule

      Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).

      Minimum Qualifications

      • Must be a law student at an ABA or CBA accredited law school.
      • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
      • Excellent Microsoft Excel skills.
      • Knowledge of modern office methods and procedures.
      • Organizational skills, problem-solving skills.
      • Excellent analytical skills.
      • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
      • Excellent attendance.
      • Ability to perform tasks requiring attention to detail.
      • Ability to prioritize assignments to ensure they are completed in a timely manner.
      • Ability to communicate effectively.
      • Ability and willingness to learn new tasks and show initiative.
      • Must have excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills both in oral and written form.
      • Experience working in a "team" environment and accepting direction from one or more technical lead staff.
      • Possess a strong desire to learn new skills.


      Preferred Qualifications

      • Individuals who are, or have been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, or a formerly incarcerated youth as defined by Government Code section 18220 are encouraged to apply and will be given priority.       Duties and Responsibilities

      • Conduct legal research.
      • Create legal documents such as trial brief support and position statements.
      • Assist with subpoena processing.
      • Assist with legal project work such as gathering data and compiling research.
      • Job shadowing attorneys to observe chamber discussions and open court proceedings.
      • Assist with depositions, such as setting calendars, reviewing evidence, summarizing medical records, and summarizing deposition transcripts.
      • Conduct research related to liens, research electronic claims files for documents related to Medical Provider Network compliance, Utilization.
      • Review denials, and pre-lien conferences.
      • Prepare the Pre-Trial Conference Statement (lien).
      • Assist with mandatory settlement conference preparation by drafting pre-trial conference statements and exhibit lists, preparing objections per attorney instructions, and prepare summaries of evidence.
      • Prepare trial exhibits, contact and interview witnesses, and assist attorneys with meetings and trial preparation.
      • Review and identify Utilization Review denials, requests for authorization from providers, correspondences, and medical records to determine compliance with statutory regulations related to expedited hearing preparation.


      Physical Requirements

      Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.

      Working Conditions

      Work is performed in an office environment.

      Occasional local travel may be required if working in the office, therefore, the candidate(s) must have a valid California driver's license and be acceptable for vehicle insurance coverage under the University
      Enterprises, Inc. insurance plan.

      This position has been authorized as remote work and may be filled in any of the following work locations:

      Pleasanton, Vacaville, San Francisco/Rohnert Park, San Jose, Riverside, Oxnard, Glendale.

      Due to COVID-19, students will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI telework agreement.
