Provide hands-on technical and managerial support for Fairfield University’s Studio Art program.
Provide routine cleaning and organizing of five art studios (Sculpture, Drawing, Painting, Darkroom, Print Studio), a digital print lab, two art galleries; and their related equipment and supplies to ensure they are in operable condition. Liase with Facilities management as necessary.
Provide specialized studio/laboratory technical services and assistance to faculty and students including preparing art studios and labs for class sessions, troubleshooting equipment, and providing access to spaces and equipment throughout the work week as needed.
Inventory and order supplies on a regular basis to ensure availability.
Ensure University safety procedures are in place and followed (maintain safety training and hazardous material data, oversee disposal of hazardous/chemical materials). Represent the Studio Art Department at bi-monthly University Safety Meetings.
Support the art galleries and hallway exhibition spaces by: maintaining the exhibition schedule, providing exhibiting artists and students with guidelines and access, ensuring that the gallery walls are prepared, assisting in hanging the exhibitions, publicizing Studio Art program-sponsored exhibitions by communicating information to the proper university channels, photographing the exhibitions for archival purposes.
Oversee Digital Print lab: maintain Apple iMac and Epson Fine Art inkjet printers, including ink inventory and regular scheduled maintenance, trouble shoot printing and print driver issues, install printer profess, aid students in printing and actively support faculty during class time. Facilitate access to equipment, create and maintain a print lab sign up. Act as a liaison with IT.
Work with Department Chair and Department Coordinator to oversee budget.
Hire, manage, and train student workers
BA or BFA in Studio Art is preferred
Experience managing art studios or working as a studio technician
Effective organizational, interpersonal and written/oral communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently, problem solve, and carry tasks through to completion. Customer service attitude; interact respectfully with a wide range of people.
Ability to provide hands-on attention to curricular structures including student support in the studios as well as maintenance of the studios and galleries, including digital printer maintenance.
Adept in Photoshop, MS Word, Excel, Outlook.
Understanding of Studio Art-related activities including painting, drawing, printmaking, digital photography and printing, darkroom processes, sculpture and non-traditional art-making methods.
Schedule must be flexible.
Experience with printmaking and darkroom processes and equipment
Familiarity with organizing functional spaces, like shelving and storage cabinets
Experience with 3D printing
Proficiency in Canva
10-month contract including benefits
