The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San José State University in downtown San José, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center, and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators. Mission The Student Union, Inc. of San Jose State University supports the development, growth, and well-being of students and the campus community by providing diverse programs, desired services, and quality facilities to enhance the collegiate experience. Job Summary Under supervision of the SU Operations Manager, and following additional instructions provided by other fulltime Operations personnel, and/or the Student Building Supervisor. The Student Building Assistant works a variety of weekday, weeknight and weekend shifts assisting with SU Operations, Event Services, or Building Supervision functions such as meeting space setups and strikes, maintaining cleanliness of public and meeting spaces prior to, during and after use, client interaction and enforcement of building policies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Performs custodial tasks, which include but may not be limited to cleaning restrooms, emptying trash, sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning glass, etc. inside and outside the Student Union building.
2. Interacts with clients, performs room set-ups, strikes, and security, and maintains cleanliness of public spaces and meeting and event spaces prior to, during, and after use.
3. Assists with opening and closing the building, and with monitoring of building usage in public spaces and in meeting and event spaces.
4. Reports on any building problems and/or interior or exterior damage.
5. Assists with decisions that affect the operation and public image of the SU Corporation.
6. Assists with security control for a variety of events as necessary.
7. Assists with safety and security of the SU building and its patrons.
8. Assists with enforcement of SU building policies and procedures, OSHA policies, and National Fire Protection and Life Safety issues.
9. Assists with building emergencies and with building evacuations.
10. Maintains a professional attitude and conduct at all times.
11. Performs additional job-related duties as necessary.
Job Requirements:
1. Outgoing personality with strong customer service skills.
2. Good verbal communication skills and a willingness to learn.
3. Ability to follow directions and/or work with little supervision throughout a shift or project.
4. Initiative and demonstrated ability to make mature decisions and judgments.
5. Must be assertive, with ability to enforce policies and procedures.
6. Highly responsible and willing to assist in or perform a wide variety of duties.
7. Willing and able to work a flexible schedule including weekdays, weeknights and weekends.
8. Some strenuous physical work; ability to lift, push or pull objects weighing in excess of 50 lbs.
9. Ability to develop and maintain relationships within a highly diverse community.
Qualifications and Specifications:
1. Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, American Red Cross preferred, or May acquire them during the first six months of employment (which can be accomplished through SU staff trainers). Online certifications will not be accepted.
2. Ability to work in a fast paced, upbeat, and noisy work environment.
3. Experience in a customer service setting strongly preferred.
4. Must be a current matriculated SJSU student.
Hourly Wage: $16.20 per hour

Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current SU, Inc. employee who was offered the position on a contingent basis. The standard background check includes: criminal check, employment and education verification. Depending on the position, a motor vehicle and/or credit check may be required. All background checks are conducted through the Student Union third-party vendor, Accurate Background. Some positions may also require fingerprinting. SJSU will pay all costs associated with this procedure. All Student Union at San Jose State University employees are considered mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and are required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
