- Employees in job classifications represented by Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:
5% effective 1/1/24
4% effective 7/1/24
2% effective 1/1/25
5% effective 7/1/25 - Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
- The list established for these positions may be used to fill vacancies for open space, regional parks, community parks, and other areas as necessary.
- Supervising Park Ranger employees may work unusual shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Supervising Park Ranger positions may include duties that involve hiking long distances and lifting/carrying objects up to 50 pounds.
- Supervising Park Ranger employees must wear and maintain standard uniform apparel as prescribed. Costs for the initial uniform will be reimbursed to the employee after completion of the probationary period and attainment of permanent status as a Supervising Park Ranger.
- Supervising Park Ranger employees MUST possess the following within six months from the date of hire: Completion of a valid California Penal Code 832 Powers of Arrest course (or equivalent, if out-of-state); and a valid CPR/First Aid Certificate.
- In accordance with California Public Resources Code section 5163, all persons holding Supervising Park Ranger positions must get tested for tuberculosis (TB) when hired and every four years thereafter as a condition of continued employment.
- Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for education lacked on a year-for-year basis. One year of full-time experience = 30 semester/45 quarter college-level units.
- Resource management, protection, and habitat restoration at a resource-based, open space, or regional park.
- Writing, presenting, or conducting natural, historical, cultural, or other similar educational/interpretive programs.
- Enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations.
- Experience maintaining park grounds is NOT qualifying.
- City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
- Resource management experience in trail maintenance and/or habitat restoration.
- Knowledge of regional, natural, and cultural history.
- Experience enforcing regulations and issuing citations.
- Park guide or tour leader experience.
- Investigative work experience.
- Archeological or historical preservation research experience.
- Forestry and/or fire management experience in a park, recreational area, or conservation area.
- Experience in the development and implementation of policies related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas.
- Proof of degree/transcripts, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
- For City of San Diego employees, proof of Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA), if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.

Supervising Park Ranger positions, under direction and through subordinate Senior Park Rangers, plan, coordinate, implement, and manage general and specialized programs throughout several regional, historical, and/or open space park areas, including programs related to resource management, historical interpretation, enforcement, special events, special projects, and administrative tasks; administer district and division-wide contractual programs and services; develop budgets for programs and determine training, staffing, and equipment needs; inspect and supervise the maintenance of safety equipment, facilities, and supplies; review and investigate complaints, emergencies, injuries, accidents, and incident reports; coordinate and manage safety and rescue services with other governmental and law enforcement agencies; act as representatives for the department/division before committees, community groups, and the media; testify in court regarding matters of enforcement and litigation; and perform related work.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education (i.e., minimum completed units = 120 semester/180 quarter).
