      The Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing comprehensive department and community-wide sustainability programs. Directs and coordinates sustainability-related functions throughout the City; creates, implements, and evaluates internal and external programs, operations, and educational opportunities; works closely with the City’s leadership team, communications, public service, other departments, residents, businesses, and the public. This position works under the direction of the Director of Public Service.Leads initiatives to improve efficiency and sustainability within City operations, including City facilities.

      Develops and evaluates City-wide programs, policies and related documentation.

      Develops, promotes, and implements programs, trainings, workshops, educational materials, and incentives to improve sustainability efforts and convey information, available services, and assistance for the business, residential, educational, and governmental sectors, including:

      Connects target audiences to local, regional, and national resources that assist with reducing waste, such as certification programs.

      Interfaces with outside agencies and attend meetings and events on behalf of the City, as needed.

      Manages engagement with external partners and identifies opportunities to collaborate to meet sustainability goals.

      Serves as secretary to and liaison with the City’s Green Team.

      Reviews and develops data collection methods for assigned programs. Ensures programs have an adequate data collection component to measure the impacts of the program. Generates reports on the status and outcomes of programs and projects as needed.

      Monitors and reports challenges and issues with program implementation.

      Evaluates the goals and objectives of assigned programs on an annual basis. Assess the program needs within the City and how the program aligns with other organizational and department strategies.

      Prepares an annual report on City accomplishments and activities.

      Assists in developing budgets for projects and annual cycles related to assigned programs; research and review previous budgets and associated costs.

      Drafts and submits grant applications relative to sustainability efforts.

      Collaborates with the Communications Department to create press releases, announcements, and social media posts.

      Develops timelines and secures equipment needed for community and media events.

      Updates the City of Westerville website.

      Drafts occasional social media updates and blog posts to keep the public knowledgeable of the City’s sustainability projects and events.

      Attends conferences and webinars to learn what other cities and counties are doing and learn best practices and how to implement change, and researches to stay abreast in the sustainability field.

      Performs additional duties as assigned including assisting with task forces, committees, etc.

      Demonstrates a positive attitude and supports City goals and objectives;

      Responds to stakeholder questions and situations in accordance with City policy and in a manner to enhance the reputation of the City as a public service organization;

      Supports the goals of the Public Service Department.

      Assists with customer service activities.

      Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience and knowledge, skills, and/or experience in sustainability, or a related field

      Strong leadership skills including the ability to: serve as a role model, demonstrate sound judgment, resolve problems and conflicts equitably, and maintain a forward-moving team environment

      Maintains composure and professionalism under pressure

      Sensitive to deadlines and completes work accurately and effectively in a timely manner

      Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders

      Ability to define problems, collect and evaluate data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions

      Project management experience including planning, tracking, and evaluating projects

      Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, as needed

      Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgment in handling information and records

      Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills

      Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software


      Preferred Qualifications:

      Experience with event or program planning and implementation

      Knowledge of and experience with web design, social media platforms, and/or graphic design
