      ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

      • Identify future needs for the North American market. Communicate these needs to Nippon Paint Japan or as appropriate. Discuss with customers as needed
      • Develop annual technical plan, which merges future technology needs and annual business plan requirements. Ensure accomplishment of objectives derived from technical plan
      • Operate department within required budget, and facilitate development of future business plans including operating and capital expenditures
      • Assist in aligning departments technical plan to the organization strategic business plan
      • Oversee Technical Performance Management system; identify deficiencies, training needs, and employee development
      • Execute established corporate and departmental policies, procedures, and programs. Develop and modify departmental policies and procedures as needed
      • Lead pre-treatment, electrocoating and topcoat joint technical programs. Include marketing as specified by CEO and/or executive members
      • Develop and ensure the execution of annual technical and quality systems training for all departmental staff members
      • Direct the technical activities to ensure the development of quality OEM/GI formulations, specification and initial manufacturing procedures and storage conditions which meet customer specifications. Includes raw material specifications, storage, work-off materials, and supplier quality audits
      • Provide technical consultation and support to customers and our on-site service representatives
      • Travels to customer facilities offering technical advice for enhancing the product for OEM automotive and/or general industrial suppliers
      • Review customer’s operational condition through assessing technical staff’s analysis and recommendations
      • Work with production and quality control to determine causes of nonconformity with regard to product or delivery
      • Equip staff and maintain ISO/TS and customer specification standards. Develop SOP’s and standards. Ensures staff training and implementation. Work with internal and external auditors to assure continuing recertification
      • Provide analytical support for all business units and departments within NPAA. Obtain specialized analytical support from suppliers and customers (e.g. FRL, Ciba, Anderson) as needed
      • Initiate secrecy, non-analysis, toll-manufacturer and joint development agreements with suppliers, customers or third-party companies as required.
      • Assist with technical transfer to Toll-Manufacturer, conducts quality audits on Toll-Manufacturers and monitor quality of performance as needed
      • Facilitates weekly meetings to discuss current trends, action plans, and future developments
      • Researches new or domestic raw materials with laboratory staff and recommend changes for cost savings and/or performance improvement
      • Manage workforce through counseling and coaching, while building diversity and motivation by the fair and equal treatment of all employees through consistent ethical application of policy and procedures
      • Responsible for the safety, health, and environment aspects of the technical operation, including company policy and prudent laboratory practices. Oversee monthly safety meetings, assure safety concerns are corrected and review near misses to improve technical operations
      • Site technical representative for compliance audits

      ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

      • Maintain positive atmosphere between departments harmonizing the culture
      • Ensures successful interaction between external customer, vendors, third party-providers and business agencies
      • Continually research the academic and commercial/industrial sectors for new technologies, processes, and innovative ideas for possible inclusion to manufacturing
      • Complete other assigned duties as specified

      SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES

      • 5 to 80 employees

      EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR CERTIFICATION

      • BS degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering required; MS degree preferred
      • Equivalent experience in a related Specialty Chemical Manufacturing Environment with B.S. degree in Science-related field
      • 10+ years of experience in industrial or automotive (OEM) industrial experience
      • A broad base of scientific knowledge and experience in chemistry, coatings, and polymers
