      Assistant/Associate Professor Geography and Geographic Information Science (Tenure-Track)

      The George Mason University, Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science (GGS), within the College of Science, invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. We welcome applications from researchers working in any part of geography and geographic information science, but we especially encourage candidates with expertise in (i) cartography and geovisualization, (ii) geospatial data science, and (iii) quantitative remote sensing and digital image processing to apply. This full-time, tenure-track position is scheduled to begin in August 2024.       Responsibilities:

      The Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science at George Mason University offers cutting-edge research and education in geography, remote sensing, geoinformatics, and geointelligence. We embrace the complexities of human interactions with natural and urban environments by growing our competence in Geoinformation Science. Located in the Washington DC metropolitan area, the department has strong links with federal agencies and industry, which provides dynamic research opportunities and attracts high quality graduate students.

      We are seeking outstanding candidates with expertise that complements existing research efforts and teaching offerings at our department. We especially encourage candidates with expertise in (i) cartography and geovisualization, (ii) geospatial data science, and (iii) quantitative remote sensing and digital image processing to apply.

      The selected candidate will develop an externally funded research portfolio that will advance the mission of GGS, advise graduate students at both the master’s and Ph.D. levels, provide core support to our successful and growing programs in Geography and Geoinformation Science, teach core and advanced courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels (the equivalent of two courses per semester) and develop new courses as needed in areas of specialization.

      Required Qualifications:

      • Ph.D. in geography, geoinformatics, data science, or a closely related field is required by time of appointment;
      • Ability to develop a significant and active research agenda in a field of specialization;
      • A demonstrated record of publishing peer-reviewed scholarship; and
      • Ability to teach courses offered by the department and a field of specialization.

      Preferred Qualifications:

      • A demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and potential of seeking/securing external research grants.
