      The Glendale Police Department employs 444 sworn officers and 161 civilian employees. Located on the western edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area, Glendale is a culturally diverse community with approximately 250,000 residents.       Reporting to the Traffic Services Supervisor, Traffic Services Specialists perform a variety of tasks related to traffic violations and vehicle accidents. They may assist with other non-violent calls for service and with crime scenes as needed. This work may be conducted in the field and in an office setting.

      1. Responds to non-emergency calls for service in-lieu of a Police Officer; responds to motorist assist; responds to traffic hazards in the roadway and reported abandoned vehicles. Exchanges information with other Police agencies concerning traffic and/or criminal activity.
      2. Provides traffic control including traffic accidents, crime scenes, fires, funerals, special events, and power outages. Operates a portable/mobile radio to maintain contact with Glendale personnel and other agencies.
      3. Responds to traffic collisions and prepares necessary reports required for hit & runs, physical injury collisions, private property collisions, and collisions involving City of Glendale property. Verifies information of involved parties requesting to exchange information in lieu of a crash report. Traffic Service Specialists will respond when requested for Police Accident Investigators (PAI).
      4. Performs a variety of duties to enforce specific sections of the City of Glendale municipal ordinances; proactively patrols the City to enforce parking codes and regulations by issuing warnings or citations as applicable; has vehicles towed as required; and advises the public on laws and regulations affecting parking. Answers questions of criminal and civil nature from citizens.
      5. Identifies, documents, preserves and collects evidence at crime scenes including from general crimes investigated within the scope of own investigation; major crime scenes in support of other personnel; performs photography duties as requested. Writes reports in reference to investigations; completes evidence reports on property collected; and books evidence or property into evidence.
      6. Prepares and enters detailed reports into police computerized databases. Makes entries into the NCIC/ACIC criminal history computer database
      7. Prepares cases for presentation to prosecutors for possible prosecution in court; testifies in court.
      8. Performs other duties as assigned.
      One year of responsible customer service or citizen assistance experience in a police agency or related environment. College coursework in criminal justice is preferred. Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

      Knowledge of:
      Criminal codes and statutes, criminal offenses and contributing elements under City and State laws
      Methods and techniques of investigative interviewing
      Basic report writing and preparation methods
      Skill in:
      Operation of basic computer equipment
      Typing, word processing, data entry and office machine operation
      Ability to:
      Respond to inquiries and requests for assistance from investigators, other police department personnel and the general public
      Communicate effectively orally and in writing
      Learn applicable laws, statutes, policies and procedures
      Exercise sound judgment under stress, and solve problems using deductive reasoning
      Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, other agencies and City employees
      Special Requirements
      Shift work is required.
      Terminal Operator Certification, Level A, within six months of hire.
      Applicants will be required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy.

      Working Conditions
      Office setting and/or fieldwork to obtain evidence at crime scenes.
      Interaction with distraught or abusive individuals.
