      TxDOT's Central Design B section is looking for a Transportation Engineer Specialist I or II based in Houston, TX at our headquarters.       Monthly Salary Range:

      Transport Eng Spec I (B18): $3,974.40 - $5,639.25/mo.

      Transport Eng Spec II (B19): $3,974.40 - $6,034.00/mo.

      Transportation Engineer Specialist I

      Performs advanced and specialized drafting, calculations and design work; performs field work; uses automated systems; learns specialized techniques. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

      Transportation Engineer Specialist II

      Performs advanced and specialized drafting, calculations and design work; performs field work; uses automated systems; learns specialized techniques. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

      Essential Duties:

      Transportation Engineer Specialist I

      • Learns specialized design and project development techniques.
      • Performs advanced and specialized design work.
      • Performs advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features.
      • Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps.
      • Reviews work done by others for drafting and calculation errors.
      • Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.
      • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

      Transportation Engineer Specialist II

      The following are in addition to the job duties listed above:

      • Trains less experienced technicians
      • Uses additional automated design tools or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, signal lighting design, retaining walls and building design.
      • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

      Minimum Qualifications:

      Education

      Transportation Engineer Specialist I and II

      High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

      Experience

      Transportation Engineer Specialist I:

      6 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

      Transportation Engineer Specialist II

      7 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

      Licenses and Certifications

      Transportation Engineer Specialist I and II

      Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.


      Preferred Qualifications:

      The ability to learn roadway OpenRoad 3D modeling, roadway drainage and traffic control design is essential.

      Transportation Engineer Specialist I:

        • Advanced and specialized design/drafting procedures
      • Considerable knowledge of:
        • Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities.
        • Higher mathematics
        • Interactive graphic and design information systems
        • Applicable computer software applications and hardware
      • Some knowledge of:
        • Design and plan preparation methods and requirements
        • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
      • Proficient skill in:
        • Maintaining a safe working relationship
        • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment
      • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals

      Transportation Engineer Specialist II

      Includes all competencies listed for Transportation Specialist I as well as:

      • Extensive knowledge of:
        • Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities.
        • Interactive graphic and design information systems
        • Applicable computer software applications and hardware
      • Considerable knowledge of:
        • Design and plan preparation methods and requirements
        • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
      • Expert skill in:
        • Performing advanced drafting
      • Some skill in:
        • Applying engineering principles, practices and methods in job responsibilities

      Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

      • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
      • Subject to noise
      • Subject to vibration
      • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or another device.
      • Medium work: Lift up to 50lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25lbs.
      • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
      • Standing-prolonged periods of time
      • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another.
