      AIG Lex London are a leading provider of excess casualty products in the surplus lines market. Lex-London underwriters combine deep expertise with a broad appetite for risk and are empowered to deliver for our clients and brokers.       About the role:

      This is an underwriting role within the Lex London US Financial Lines team. This role analyses and evaluates risk and accepts, rejects, or modifies risk and coverage conditions within limits of delegated authority and in accordance with established underwriting guidelines to achieve underwriting profitability objectives.

      The Underwriter’s primary responsibility is to underwrite individual risks through a demonstration of the following skills and abilities:

      • Fundamentals of coverage, terms and conditions. Ability to offer coverage, terms and conditions which generate a profit for the Company while meeting the needs of the customer.
      • Risk Assessment. Ability to identify risk exposures, special or common hazards, and appropriate controls. Ability to select risk based on exposure and risk analysis. Ability to analyze claims and quantify losses.
      • Financial proficiency. Understanding of financial statements and ratios used in risk analysis. Understanding of insurance financial fundamentals; impact of underwriting decisions on company assets.
      • Marketing and Communications. Ability to sell and negotiate to achieve bottom line profitability for the Company. Ability to make presentations and communicate articulately.

      Responsibilities include:

      • Reviews applications and financial requirements to determine acceptability of risk in accordance with AIG’s guidelines and standards
      • Ability to identify risk exposures, special or common hazards, and appropriate controls. Ability to analyse claims and quantify losses.
      • Ability to demonstrate strong business acumen, financial and analytical skills, and critical thinking skills which lead to confident decision making and judgment.
      • Demonstrated success in negotiation and building collaborative relationships.
      • Proven multi-tasking, prioritizing and time management skills.
      • Able to appropriately balance changing priorities based upon underwriting needs and perform within time constraints with a high volume of work.
      • Work with more senior underwriters or management on risks exceeding authority level or requiring special handling
      • Ability to sell and negotiate to achieve bottom line profitability for the Company.
      • Ability to make presentations and communicate articulately to brokers and insureds.
      • Ability to manage producer strategy.
      • Develop and maintain a submission pipeline sufficient to achieve overall production and business mix objective
      • Adhere to guidelines and underwriting discipline to minimise exposure and appropriately price risks
      • Assist management with data analytics and portfolio management/analysis.
      • Proactively keep up to date with industry, business issues and trends.
      • Attend client/broker functions when required.
      • Maintain accurate files, registers and records to contribute to management reporting and timely service and policy issuance.

      Technical Skills and Experience:

      • Underwriting experience and preferably a familiarity with the US Financial Lines marketplace; other relevant professional experience or qualifications (such as CII, ACII, or equivalent) may substitute.
      • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university.
      • Working knowledge of financial statements and analysis.
      • Excellent interpersonal, communication and analytical skills.
      • Excellent organisational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
      • Ability to work in dynamic, rapidly changing environment, adapting to changing requirements and collaborating with a wide range of colleagues to quickly deliver solutions, especially regarding technical aspects.
      • Detail-oriented with demonstrated ability to self-direct, prioritise work, and meet deadlines.
      • Takes initiative on projects and assignments, seeks alternate solutions when necessary.
      • Willingness to be flexible, learn on the job, and maintain a can-do attitude.
