Manage all aspects of underwriting process.
Select and classify risks according to company philosophy and standards.
Manage retention.
Help maintain profitable mortality experience.
Analyze and interpret medical, non-medical and financial information.
Make decisions within approval limits.
Determine appropriate requirements and comply with departmental procedures.
Communicate and collaborate with the field and head office colleagues to provide the highest quality and service levels to customers.
Maintain positive and effective relationships with internal and external partners.
Identify and provide solutions to work related problems and issues (i.e.. work flow, systems).
Be a training and information resource for more junior underwriters.
Build and maintain good relationships within a self-directed team environment
Negotiate and manage time and resources to meet deadlines and service times
Sell decisions to producers and client Sell decisions to reinsurers where offers differ significantly
Consistently make competitive offers without compromising overall underwriting policies or mortality

Satisfactory completion of yearly audit.

Recommendation of internal and/or intermediate partners.
Recommendation from medical team, technical consulting areas and management team.

Completion of technical underwriting seminars.

Minimum 5 years’ underwriting experience
Post-secondary education or equivalent work experience
Approval limit at 100% performance is $2,500,000 standard individual life and $5,000,000 standard survivorship life to age 79. Substandard approval limit at 300%.
ALU Level 1 certificate ALU 201, 202 ACS 100
Strong knowledge of underwriting function; good understanding of company’s various businesses. General knowledge of referral areas.
Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong analytical skills; ability to define, research and resolve problems.
Strong knowledge of mainframe and PC environment.
Ability to create and maintain customer relationships.
Ability to prioritize and work effectively under deadlines balancing published service times with an appropriate customer focus.
Ability to comprehend, retain and apply current technical information to daily work issues.
Sound knowledge of insurance contract law and state legislative requirements.
Strong knowledge of company plans, riders, benefits and illustrations (and how they are marketed).
Sound knowledge of reinsurance marketplace (including underwriting strengths and weaknesses) to work proactively with the field where reinsurance is an opportunity.
Thorough understanding of automatic reinsurance agreements.
Strong knowledge of medical science, technology and terminology and their impact on mortality.
Sound knowledge of financial and other non-medical underwriting factors. Basic knowledge of product pricing

Salary range is expected to be between
$55,125.00 CAD - $91,875.00 CADIf you are applying for this role outside of the primary location, please contact recruitment@manulife.com for the salary range for your location. The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training.
