      Position Details:

      Stewards Individual Placement Program (STE) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

      STE in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Long Island Field Office is seeking an individual to serve as an Outreach/Biotech Intern. The mission of the USFWS is to work with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. This intern will assist biologists with surveys for threatened and endangered species, colonial waterbirds, marsh birds and wading birds. The position will also be responsible for assisting with management of nesting habitat for example, the removal of symbolic fencing on beaches. In addition to these and other duties, the intern will develop social media posts, blogs, and or story maps to help inform the public of the value of the natural resources of Long Island.

      Position Responsibilities will include:

      1. Field Surveys for Federally Listed and At-Risk Species

      · Serve as a Biological Technician for the Long Island Field Office. Conduct field surveys in various coastal and upland locales around Long Island and NYC for federally listed species including piping plover, roseate tern, red knot, and seabeach amaranth, as well as at-risk species such as the saltmarsh sparrow

      · Collect population and productivity data, location data, habitat type data, and predator information for listed and at-risk species. Maintain field notes in orderly and neat manner. Perform data entry in Excel.

      · Install and maintain signage, symbolic fencing, and/or predator enclosures for federally listed shorebird and plant species at select sites.

      · Interact with beach users about federally listed species biology and management and record disturbances/harm and harassment from recreational activities (intrusions into protected areas, off-road vehicles, dogs, boat landings, etc.).

      - Training will be provided in listed and at-risk species biology and in identifying, monitoring, and performing select management activities for species’ conservation; and the intern will receive training in operating an UTV, binocular and scope use, and handheld GPS unit.

      2. Field Surveys in Support of Project Reviews

      · Work in conjunction with biologists to collect information on physical and biological characteristics of federal section 10 of the River and Harbor Act and Section 404 of the Clean Water Act permit applications and other proposed development projects.

      · Assist in completing consultation documents such as Standard Local Operating Procedures for Endangered Species (SLOPES) forms, responses to request for comments, etc.

      - In-house trainings relative to saltmarsh conservation, biological principles, environmental laws and regulations, and public communications; and the training described above.

      3. Outreach Associate Activities

      · Work in conjunction with biologists to develop outreach materials such as social media posts, press releases, story maps, field notes, etc., and update existing outreach materials and manuals relating to fish and wildlife resources, projects,

      · Participate in virtual and/or in-person outreach events.

      - In-house trainings relative to biological principles and laws, and public communications and the training described above.

      Minimum Requirements:

      Undergraduate degree in the related field for this internship.

      · Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to safely operate a vehicle.

      · The ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal format.

      Preferred Qualifications:

      The ability to work with a team and coordinate activities with other team members.

      Working Conditions/Physical Effort:

      Interns may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on varying terrain and potentially under physically demanding circumstances.

      These conditions:

      • Present the possibility of injury and exposure to hazards such as ticks and biting insects.

      • Require long hours in isolated settings

      • Require physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions on potentially difficult or hazardous terrain

      • Require the ability to occasionally use hand tools and/or light machinery

      • Require the willingness to travel frequently, work varying shifts, and potentially overnight stays.

      Benefits:

      Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $1, 459.26 (pre-tax).

      · Living Allowance: $600/week (pre-tax)

      · Housing Allowance: $103/week (pre-tax)
