      Job purpose

      Utility Dock workers are learning to perform the duties of the dock technician work required in the general labor, maintenance and construction of marine railways and floating dry docks. Levels are based on proficiency, knowledge, skills and abilities.

      Duties and responsibilities

It does not imply that all positions within the class perform all of the duties listed, nor does it necessarily list all possible duties that may be assigned.)

      1. Works under the direction of department supervisor or group leader and receives job training from department supervisor.
      2. Performs assigned helper jobs such as vessel jobs such as clean up, Climbs in and out of tanks for cleaning purposes, or if qualified fire watch for hot work being performed by tradesmen, pick up unused equipment and hoses, welding leads, etc., upon completion of jobs.
      3. When a regular vacancy occurs in higher labor/helper grades, supervisors may draw from employees in the labor/helper pool who have shown adaptability to their work and successful job performance.
      4. Basic tape reading skills
      5. Able to learn Nautical terms (Bow, Stern, Port , etc.…)
      6. Assist in docking evolutions
      7. Works with the Technicians to set up and operate wood-working tools to cut, form, and finish job. Erects or dismantles structures, repairs, or refinishes walls and structures.

      Additional responsibilities:

      1. May work as part of mechanics team in semi-annual overhaul program.
      2. May do touch up or incidental painting after structural repair.
      3. May repair pallets and skids as time is available.
      4. Assists in blocking for vessels on marine railways and floating dry docks.

      1. The ability to work in overhead structures and around beneath machinery.
      2. Considerable physical effort of hands and arms would be required.

      Frequent contact with skilled trade workers, superintendents, management and/ or customers.

      Work Environment

      Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, near moving mechanical parts and includes occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and to vibration.

      Physical Demands

      The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

      The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

      Position Type/ Expected Hours of Work

      This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday. This position periodically requires long hours and weekend work. Regular and predictable on-site attendance is an essential function and a prerequisite to perform other essential functions of the position.

      Required Education and Experience

      1. High school degree or equivalent.

      Preferred Education or Experience

      Education based on requirements that are job-related and consistent with the business necessity.

      1. Experience in a Shipyard/ Military setting.
      1. Skills, knowledge, or experience required for this occupation will depend on the job class. Must include related on-the-job training and experience in shipbuilding, marine railways, floating dry docks, and carpenter work
