      Location/Division Specific Information

      The position is based in Ann Arbor, MI within the Bioinformatics team in the Clinical Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) Division. The mission of this business unit is to develop NGS based solutions to support oncology research and other important unmet medical needs.

      A Bioinformatics Variant Scientist III will review, analyze, and compile biomarker based clinical data from literature and trials in cancer. In this role, you will add scientific and technical expertise to a cross-functional team of variant scientists, bioinformatics scientists, and software developers to build and maintain an internal knowledgebase of genomic aberrations and relevant therapies related to cancer.       What will you do?

      • Read, interpret, and curate evidence from approved therapies, practice guidelines, clinical trials, and peer-reviewed literature using internal software tools.
      • Participate in the interpretation, analysis, and summarization of gene variant annotations and classification.
      • Author summaries that describe the relationships between gene variants and disease prognosis, diagnosis, and therapy selection from literature.
      • Provide oncology expertise to the curation team in solid tumor and/or heme cancers.
      • Develop and implement curation strategies or improve existing protocols for variant classification, variant interpretation, and clinical reporting.
      • Develop and maintain scalable processes that ensure data accuracy and quality.

      Education:

      • This position requires the knowledge and skills acquired through the completion of a PhD in cancer biology, cancer genomics, or molecular biology.
      • Knowledge of molecular mechanisms of disease, tumor biology, and oncogenic signaling pathways is required.
      • Expertise in solid tumor or hematological cancer is a plus.

      Experience:

      • Experience in reviewing and summarizing scientific literature for somatic and germline variants is required.
      • Ability to interpret complex genomic data from technologies including but not limited to next-generation sequencing (NGS).
      • Hands-on experience using biological databases, disease ontologies, disease classification systems, and cancer genomic databases.
      • 3+ years of industry or clinical laboratory experience working in genomic variant curation and clinical interpretation is highly preferred.
      • Prior experience with NGS and bioinformatics analysis of genomics data.
      • Previous post-doctoral experience.
      • Experience with IVD/regulated product development or genetic counseling (nice to have).

      • Able to communicate, receive, and understand information and ideas with diverse groups of people.
      • Able to operate in a fast-paced environment while prioritizing and balancing multiple projects or activities.
      • Proficient self-starter with minimal oversight from manager.
      • English language written, oral communication skills, and digital literacy are needed.
