      The Office of Council Member-Elect Katie Cashman is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of Ward 7 Policy Aide. This politically appointed position provides communications, constituent services, research, engagement, and outreach assistance to the Council Member. Council Member Elect-Cashman and her staff will assume office on January 1st, 2024 as part of the 2024-2025 City Council term.
      1. Process and handle constituent concerns. Receive inquiries and complaints by phone, in person and by mail, investigate solutions and follow up to ensure all complaints are adequately handled.
      2. Conduct research for the Council Member on committee and ward issues. Analyzes data and prepares recommendations.
      3. Represent the Council Member at meetings in City Hall and in the ward. These meetings involve working evenings and weekends.
      4. Write letters, memos, reports and newsletters for the Council Member.
      5. Manage special projects and events for the Council Member.
      6. Manage the office in the absence of the Council Member.
      7. Working with the Council Member to advance their goals and strategies for the City, including Council-adopted strategic planning goals and ward-specific goals.
      8. Provide strategic advice and recommendations to the Council Member on policy initiatives, key decisions before the Council, constituent inquiries and concerns, and other projects.
      9. Move the Council Member’s initiatives through the public participation and policy-making process.
      10. Identify issues of common concern amongst constituents and across the City and convene interested parties to discuss potential solutions.
      11. Provide the Council Member with written and oral policy briefings necessary for meetings and decision-making.
      12. Build productive working relationships with the offices of City Council members and the Mayor, their staff, and city departments.
      13. Track the agendas of City Council Committees and pertinent Boards and Commissions and brief the Council Member on items of interest.
      14. Advise and direct the Council Associate to respond promptly to meeting requests and make proactive recommendations for the Council Member’s schedule.
      15. Advise and direct the Council Associate on constituent services and inquiries.
      16. Direct Council office external communications, including strategic messaging and talking points, press relations, and social media.
      17. Coordinate with City communications staff as appropriate to ensure that media inquiries are responded to in a timely manner by the appropriate person.
      18. Develop and produce a regular Council Office email newsletter to provide public updates on initiatives underway in the City and by the Council Member.
      19. Maintain and update content on the Council Member’s webpage.
      20. Keep the Council Member apprised of news coverage about issues and activities related to the Council Member and their agenda.
      21. Provide advice and recommendations to the Council Member on community engagement strategy to advance their priorities.
      22. Serve as the Council Member’s representative and liaison to community groups, boards and commissions, other policy makers, and community stakeholders.

      Working Conditions: Standard office setting with some work in the Ward. Some evening assignments may occur occasionally.

      Required Qualifications
      • Bachelor’s Degree required
      • 2-3 years of experience in related job duties and responsibilities
      • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office Suite with advanced skill including Word, Excel, Outlooks, Teams, and Sharepoint.
      Preferred Qualifications:
      • Experience working at Minneapolis City Hall and relationships with city staff.
      • Organizing and/or community engagement experience with Ward 7 communities. Knowledge of the neighborhoods.

      • Policy knowledge around community safety, housing justice, climate/clean energy, economic revitalization.
      • Political experience in campaigns, government, and/or elected officials and ability to work the legislative process.
      • Committed to enhancing and improving cultural humility, intentionally creating inclusive and accessible spaces, and working to end disparities.
      • Ability to meet and interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner. Maintain confidentiality and discretion
      • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently.
      • Excellent time management skills and proven ability to meet deadlines.
      • Reliable and self-motivated.
