      Job Description:

      In this position you will serve Nebraska consumers by ensuring equity in the marketplace.

      The Weights and Measures program protects the integrity of commercial measurements through annual certification of weighing and measuring equipment. This Weights and Measures Inspector position covers the assigned inspection area in South Central Nebraska. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required as the inspector will operate a large truck.

      Travel would be in the inspection area of 14 counties in South Central Nebraska (Furnas, Harlan, Franklin, Webster, Nuckolls, Clay, Adams, Kearney, Phelps, Gosper, Dawson, Buffalo, Hall, and Hamilton) and includes periodic overnight travel. We provide you with a state vehicle and the equipment you’ll need to perform inspections. Residence in the inspection area is preferred. Initial one to four days of training will be held in Lincoln, additional training will be held in your inspection area. Initial training typically lasts 3 – 4 weeks, but continued training opportunities exist. There may be some overnight travel for training and occasional meetings.

      Job duties

      Conduct inspections of scales ranging in capacities from 600 grams to 150,000 lbs. Efficiently maintain required inspection frequency in area. Submit all inspection reports electronically. Collect Weights and Measures permit applications. Maintain vehicles (Pickup & Large-Scale Truck). Maintain testing equipment (weights). Other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification.

      Requirements / Qualifications

      Minimum Qualifications: Post high school coursework/training in agriculture, plant/animal or natural sciences, or other program related field OR a vocation certificate in electrical, mechanical, engineering or other program related field. AND Two years’ experience working in a relevant discipline.

      Preferred: Valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and a high school diploma. Experience in using computers, Smart phones, Excel.

      Other: Physical capability and endurance to routinely lift and carry up to 50 lbs. on a daily basis. Regular and reliable attendance is required. This position requires travel. As such, the incumbent must be able to present a valid driver’s license or another form of reliable transportation.


      Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

      Possess good written and oral communication skills and the ability to interact and build rapport with business owners and the general public. The ability to understand and communicate legal requirements, policies, and procedures of the program. Ability to operate computers and have a basic understanding of computer software programs and have the ability to prioritize and efficiently plan all inspections in a productive manner.
