      Job Description:

The Weights and Measures program protects the integrity of commercial measurements by inspecting weighing and measuring equipment.

      This position works throughout Douglas County. Travel would be in the inspection area and may include periodic travel to other inspection areas or meetings. We provide you with a state vehicle and the equipment you'll need to perform inspections, and your home becomes your office.

      Residence in the Area is preferred. Initial training will be held in Lincoln, additional training will be held in your inspection area. Initial training typically lasts 3 - 4 weeks, but continued training opportunities exist. There may be some overnight travel for training and occasional meetings.

      Job duties

      • Conduct inspections of scales ranging in capacities from 600 grams to 5,000 lbs.

      • Conduct inspections of retail motor fuel dispensers, Oil Meters and other devices.

      • Conduct package inspections of retail and wholesale commodities. Efficiently maintain required inspection frequency in Area.

      • Submit all inspection reports and paperwork efficiently.

      • Occasionally collect registration fees and Weights and Measures permit applications.

      • Maintain State vehicle/equipment.

      • Other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification.

      Requirements / Qualifications

      Minimum Qualifications: Post high school coursework/training in agriculture, plant/animal or natural sciences, or other program related field OR a vocation certificate in electrical, mechanical, engineering or other program related field. AND Two years’ experience working in a relevant discipline.

      Preferred Qualifications: Experience in using computers, Excel.

      Other: Physical capability and endurance to routinely lift and carry up to 60 lbs. daily. Regular and reliable attendance is required. This position requires travel. As such, the incumbent must be able to present a valid driver’s license or another form of reliable transportation.


      Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

      • Possess effective written and oral communication skills and the ability to interact and build rapport with business owners and the public.

      • The ability to understand and communicate legal requirements, policies, and procedures of the program.

      • The ability to operate computers and have a basic understanding of computer software programs and can prioritize and efficiently plan all inspections in a productive manner.
