Job Description

- Assists the lead person and other senior employees in maintaining equipment in working order.
- Retrieves the necessary tools and equipment to perform repairs.
- Responsible for adhering to Washington Gas Engineering & Operating standards and all other company policies and procedures.
- Responsible for adhering to Federal, State, and Local Codes.
- Completes or verifies all documents associated with the job.
- Assures that work is completed within a given timeframe.
- Responsible for personal and job site safety situations.
- Installs and removes protective barriers (i.e. shoring material).
- Follows and adheres to company standards as it pertains to proper excavation practices.
- Loads and unloads required material.
- Works in confined spaces
- Wears a respirator while working in a gaseous atmosphere or confined space.
- Breakers, rammer, clay spade, drills, cutters, saws, etc.
- Using hand excavating tools.
- Awareness and ability to follow proper procedures when excavating near or around other utilities.
- Regular and scheduled maintenance is defined as, but not limited to:
- Assisting in leak investigations, grading, detection, and surveys.
- Assisting in valve inspections, drip monitoring; and
- Assisting in tightening, adjusting, and repairing basic/minor leakage
- Reads and interprets company records, including quad maps, map books, etc.
- Professionally represents Washington Gas while communicating with customers to maintain good relations and the Company’s prestige.
- Orders materials needed for daily activities.
- Secures and stores materials safely.
- Disposes of excess debris properly.
- Keeps vehicle clean and orderly.
- Follows guidelines for returning damaged material.
- Assists with inspecting, testing, and documenting findings for CGI, fire extinguisher, PPE, etc.
- May be assigned to related business support and administrative activities (ex. storeroom cycle counts and audits, peer safety observations, vehicle clean-out, cross-functional training activities, etc.)
- High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Minimum 6 months of experience in auto repair, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, welding, carpentry, landscaping, or other construction field that includes the use of hand tools.
- 2 years of Military experience accepted in place of 6 months experience.
- Graduation from Washington Gas training partner program accepted in place of 6 months experience.
- Must pass the ACT WorkKeys Test and pre-qualifying written and practical exam(s) as applicable.
- Basic computer skills required.
- Demonstrate good verbal communication skills.
Job Description
Washington Gas is thrilled to announce our next Helper Mechanic class, projected to begin in early Summer 2024. Working under the direction of a Crew Lead, Helper Mechanics assists with maintaining and providing safe and reliable gas transportation, supporting the crew by performing manual excavation, and operating pneumatic tools, and other equipment for the maintenance of gas facilities. Helper Mechanics must safely operate company vehicles.
This position requires the ability to work on shift rotation to maintain WGL's 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week operations. Following training, job location may be as assigned at any station within the Washington Gas service territory (VA, MD, and/or DC).

What You Must Have:New hires at this level must complete all assigned training modules, qualifying exams, and field clearances, including Flagging and Plastic Pipe Joint (PPJ mechanical) certifications, gas odor recognition testing, and must complete respirator qualifications to include all hygiene requirements needed to wear a tight-fitting respirator.
*Licenses/Certifications: A valid Driver’s License is required. Must meet Company driving standards. Must acquire Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) medical card within 6 months from date hired into position.
Shift Work: Required.
Use Of Personal Vehicle: As required.
