Medical Assistant

Job Summary

The Medical Assistant supports physicians and nursing staff by providing both clinical and administrative assistance to ensure efficient patient care and smooth daily operations within the practice. This role is responsible for patient intake, documentation, clinical procedures, specimen collection, and assisting with examinations and treatments while maintaining compliance with organizational policies and patient safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

Administrative Duties

• Maintain and update patient medical records using electronic and paper systems.
• Schedule patient appointments and coordinate follow-up visits.
• Arrange laboratory services and diagnostic testing as needed.
• Perform registration, scheduling, charge posting, and order entry functions.
• Complete additional administrative duties as assigned.

Patient Care & Clinical Support

• Obtain and document patient information, including medical history, allergies, and reason for visit.
• Measure and record vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration, height, weight, and pain assessments.
• Notify the physician or registered nurse when vital signs or pain assessments fall outside normal parameters.
• Identify patients who may be in distress and promptly alert the appropriate care team.
• Assist physicians during examinations and procedures.
• Prepare patients for x-rays, tests, and other diagnostic procedures.
• Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) according to established standards.
• Administer medications as directed by a physician and within scope of practice.
• Reinforce patient and family education as delegated by the physician.

Laboratory & Clinical Procedures

• Collect, prepare, and process laboratory specimens, including phlebotomy services.
• Perform basic laboratory testing in compliance with Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) standards.
• Maintain quality control and refrigerator temperature logs.
• Clean, disinfect, and sterilize medical instruments according to health system standards.
• Follow infection prevention and control procedures at all times.

Patient Safety & Quality

• Demonstrate a strong commitment to patient safety by identifying and reporting safety concerns.
• Participate in organizational safety initiatives and reporting processes.
• Adhere to age-specific care competencies and established clinical protocols.
• Perform additional clinical duties as delegated by the physician and consistent with training, certification, and applicable state regulations.

Required Qualifications

Experience

• Minimum of one (1) year of healthcare-related experience.

Education

• High School Diploma or GED required.

Certifications

Current certification as one of the following:

• Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)
• Clinical Medical Assistant Certification (CMAC)
• Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)
• National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA)
• Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)
• Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA)

Additionally:

• CPR certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or client required within 90 days of hire.

Required Skills

• Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
• Understanding of sterile techniques and infection control practices.
• Ability to administer routine and specialized treatments according to established protocols.
• Knowledge of sanitation, safety precautions, and personal hygiene standards in a clinical setting.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to accurately document and communicate patient information.
• Ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish effective relationships with patients and staff.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
• Ability to maintain quality control standards and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a medical office, physician practice, or outpatient clinic setting.
