      Provide administrative support in the day-to-day operations and activities of the Freedom of Information Office. The job responsibilities will include, but not be limited to; processing, researching, and fulfilling assigned requests. Coordinating with internal staff when necessary to retrieve documents. Researching within various agency databases, retrieving electronic files, and providing cost estimates while communicating with clients during the process. Assist with answering the phones and taking the mail. Work closely with the FOI Director and Assistant FOI Director on requests that involve confidential information/ information requiring redaction.


      State Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and work experience that is directly related to the area of employment. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the related work experience.

      Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.


      Agency Additional Requirements: A high school diploma and 4 years of advanced clerical experience in a high-volume, fast-paced office environment. Applicant must possess excellent customer service skills and professional telephone etiquette with the ability to communicate well with the public, government officials and other professionals. Applicant must have excellent verbal and written communication skills with attention to detail and accuracy.

      Preference will be given to applicants with an associate degree (specifically in paralegal studies), a paralegal certification, and 2 years of advanced clerical experience. Preference will also be given if the applicant has a working knowledge of the Freedom of Information Act and/or has 3 years of experience working in DHEC programs.
      DRIVING RECORD: If this position requires the applicant to possess a valid driver’s license to operate a state vehicle or personal vehicle, any applicant being considered in the final stages of selection for the position will be required to provide a certified copy of a 10-year driving record.

      This position is part of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control’s (Division/Bureau). The work performed supports DHEC’s mission to improve the quality of life for all South Carolinians by protecting and promoting the health of the public and the environment. Effective July 1, 2024, this position will transfer to the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services created by Senate Bill 399 which provides for the creation of the Department of Environmental Services to assume the environmental-related functions of DHEC.
