A great opportunity to take the next step in your career

The Health Professions Review Board is a quasi-judicial administrative tribunal established under the Health Professions Act. It is headed by a chair who must be a member of the Law Society, and its members are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. The Review Board works in the public interest as a principal check and balance for self-regulated health professions’ licensing and regulatory bodies (colleges). It has a statutory mandate to hear and adjudicate applications for review of decisions made by inquiry and registration committees of all British Columbia colleges, including the College of Physicians and Surgeons, the College of Nurses and Midwives, the College of Dental Surgeons and the College of Pharmacists. It has authority to direct a college to register an applicant.

The tribunal has a monitoring and oversight role vis a vis timeliness of college complaint investigations and has a mandate to issue guidelines to colleges on complaint investigations and registration matters. It regularly deals with parties’ legal counsel, distressed and agitated applicants and registrants, sensitive personal health care information, and confidential and high-profile matters in a high conflict statutory review process. Review Board decisions are published on the national CanLII website and are subject to judicial review.

The Case Manager works independently in a high-conflict, fast-paced environment to manage quasi-judicial hearings by written and oral submissions under Part 4 of the Health Professions Act, Administrative Tribunals Act and the Review Board’s Rules of Practice and Procedure. Supports and advises tribunal members in the review and adjudicative process to ensure that it is in accordance with administrative law principles of natural justice and procedural fairness, applicable legislation, and case law.

The Case Manager Acts as navigator to guide applicants and complainants through the confidential review process to ensure access to justice, leads or participates in alternative dispute resolution processes and formal mediations, identifies systemic health professions regulatory issues or concerns, and develops guidelines and recommendations to assist colleges to ensure protection of the public by following registration, inquiry and discipline procedures that are transparent, objective, impartial and fair.
