What to Expect (Job Responsibilities):
- Represent the Department of Children Youth and Families (DCYF) in child welfare cases, including dependency, guardianship, and termination of parental rights
- Manage a high-volume litigation workload with frequent court appearances and trials
- Advise on regulatory enforcement matters and represent the agency in contested cases
- Collaborate with social workers and agency employees to prepare for hearings or trials
- Conduct legal research and analysis, and communicate with other attorneys and guardians ad litem
What is Required (Qualifications):
- Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school or completion of the WSBA's Rule 6 Law Clerk Program
- Licensed to practice law in Washington State or actively pursuing admission
- Ability to handle a caseload of 60 or more cases simultaneously
- Strong communication skills to engage effectively with client agency representatives and colleagues
- Demonstrated ability to manage time and prioritize tasks under significant caseload demands
How to Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications):
- Passion for child welfare and experience or strong desire to litigate
- Previous experience in handling contested matters in trial courts
- Background in public service and commitment to ethical legal practices
- Familiarity with the Indian Child Welfare Act and Washington Indian Child Welfare Act
- Interest in contributing to a diverse and inclusive workplace
