      Job Summary

      The Assistant Director for Professional Development works closely with the Department of Access Services Director of Operations and Director to assist in the coordination, development, and oversight of the DAS Professional Development Program that serves RIT/NTID’s 125 staff interpreters. Responsibilities of the position include facilitating the enhancement of the skills, knowledge, abilities, and career development of all DAS staff participating in specifically designed professional development programs. This position will conduct regular assessment and review of the DAS Professional Development Program. The Assistant Director will be responsible for pursuing external experts to support dissemination of knowledge regarding current best practices in access service provision through in-person or remote professional development events. In addition, the Assistant Director for Professional Development will be responsible for overseeing all the requirements of the RID Certification Maintenance Program to provide RID approved credit bearing programming to assist certified Interpreters in certification maintenance. The Assistant Director will oversee the onboarding and orientation processes for all DAS interpreting staff new hires including collaboration with department members and institute contributors.

      Job Responsibilities

      Operation of Professional Development Program

      • Identifies and implements synchronous, asynchronous, and blended learning solutions to help staff acquire, develop and maintain the necessary skills required for work as a member of the DAS at RIT/NTID
      • Builds and leveraging relationships with professionals and organizations outside of DAS to ensure the program is continuing to incorporate current best practices in the provision of interpreting services including contract negotiation and logistics
      • Designs and directs implementation of technology strategies to impact effective professional and career development including maintaining an online registration system
      Collaborates with the Captioning Development Specialist to increase collective learning initiatives with interpreters and captionists together

      Strategic Planning and Professional Development Program Evaluation
      • Identifies strategic priorities, builds a strategic vision and drives the department personnel’s professional growth and development, implementing procedures for accomplishing professional development goals0
      • Performs needs analysis to assess skill & knowledge gaps that exist among staff members and for identifying and creating professional development opportunities accordingly
      • Conducts program evaluations by collecting and analyzing data to better align program functions with the department’s and institute’s strategic goals including creating/designing survey questions and analyzing response data
      • Monitors current program offerings to ensure the offerings are effective, current, and relevant
      • Collaborates with the Interpreting Management Team to identify and develop strategic goals for DAS staff interpreters, for implementing processes for accomplishing the identified goals, and for measuring the outcomes on an annual basis. Including 1:1 meetings with each manager and meetings with the full IMT
      Performs administrative tasks such as: monitoring costs, managing systems and materials, and coordinating administrative aspects of various programs to meet the objectives of the stakeholders

      Certification Maintenance for Interpreters
      Works closely with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and oversees all of the requirements of the RID Certification Maintenance Program to provide RID approved credit bearing programming to assist certified Interpreters in certification maintenance; responsibility includes maintaining the required documentation to support RID Continuing Educational Units (CEUs).

      Professional Development Program Committee
      • Leads standing departmental professional development committee meetings; develops professional development communications for the department.
      Trains new Professional Development Program Committee members

      Orientation and Onboarding
      • Oversees the onboarding and orientation processes for all DAS interpreting staff new hires including collaboration with department members and external contributors
      Other duties as assigned.

      Required Qualifications

      Education/Experience:

      • Associate’s degree
      • Certification, professional license, or credential: RID National Interpreter Certification
      • 8 - 10 years of experience in the field of ASL/English Interpreting
      Skills:
      • Knowledge of Human Performance Improvement principles as well as training and development, adult learning, and organizational learning strategies
      • Ability to utilize strong critical thinking skills to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative approaches
      • Interest and aptitude in learning more about management information systems
      • Ability to manage complex projects and to effectively manage detail
      • Demonstrated ability to leverage interpersonal skills to build productive relationships within the department and across the university and with outside professional organizations and universities
      • Must be a self-starter and able to work independently
      • Understanding of interpreting needs, trends, and best practices in the Post-Secondary environment
      • Proficient in ASL/English interpreting

      Department/College Description

      Department of Access Services (DAS) provides interpreting, notetaking, and real-time captioning services to the RIT community. Our goal is to provide the highest possible quality of access to communication.

      Access services enable more than 650 deaf and hard-of-hearing RIT students to register and fully participate in roughly 23,000 credit hours annually in more than 200 highly competitive academic programs. Deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing students alike use access services to communicate with each other in a variety of extra-curricular activities associated with student clubs and organizations, entertainment and sports events, and RIT programs and services.
