What to Expect (Job Responsibilities):
- Assign ICD-10-CM/PCS codes and DRGs for inpatient and CPT codes for outpatient medical records
- Abstract key data elements necessary for billing processes
- Review medical records for clinical pertinence and accuracy
- Collaborate with medical staff for clarification and education on documentation
- Maintain compliance with CE credits and industry standards
What is Required (Qualifications):
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
- Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
- In-depth knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT coding systems, and DRG systems
- Familiarity with hospital information systems and electronic medical records
- Understanding of medical-legal regulations and standards regarding confidentiality
How to Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications):
- Experience in coding and abstracting for medical records in a healthcare setting
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
- Knowledge of JCAHO standards for chart completion
