What to Expect (Job Responsibilities):
- Assign ICD-10-CM/PCS codes and DRGs for inpatient medical records; assign ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT codes for outpatient medical records
- Abstract key data elements required for billing and review records for clinical pertinence
- Interact with providers to clarify documentation and provide education
- Code records for patients currently in the hospital for interim billing purposes
- Communicate with medical staff to ensure accurate assignment of diagnoses and procedures
What is Required (Qualifications):
- Associate or bachelor's degree
- Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
- Thorough working knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT coding systems, DRG systems, and federal/state reimbursement regulations
- Familiarity with hospital information systems, electronic medical records, and encoder
- Knowledge of medical-legal rules governing confidentiality and release of medical information
How to Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications):
- Experience working in a similar coding or medical records position
- Familiarity with JCAHO standards for chart completion
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills for interaction with medical staff and providers
