What to Expect (Job Responsibilities):
- Review and code medical records to ensure accurate data abstraction and DRG assignment for various payors.
- Communicate with physicians regarding questionable diagnoses and coding issues.
- Perform data entry duties, abstracting diagnosis and procedure codes into the hospital computer system.
- Conduct quarterly audits and attend coding workshops to maintain up-to-date coding practices.
- Complete additional job-related duties as assigned to enhance departmental effectiveness.
What is Required (Qualifications):
- Certification as a CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) is required, with maintenance of certification.
- Minimum of three years of inpatient coding and/or CPT ambulatory surgery coding experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of ICD-9-CM, CPT-4 coding principles, and medical terminology.
- Accurate typing skills of at least 40 words per minute.
- Ability to achieve specified accuracy rates for inpatient and outpatient records.
How to Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications):
- Three years of advanced medical and surgical coding experience in a large acute care facility.
- Designation as RHIT, RHIA, CCS-P, CPC, or CPC-H.
- Experience mentoring and training other coders.
- Familiarity with DRG assignment and optimization processes.
