What to Expect (Job Responsibilities):
- Assess the adequacy of documentation for provider visits or procedures to support accurate coding
- Review and query providers on procedure codes and diagnoses for medical necessity and specificity
- Correct and revise codes with provider consent to ensure compliance with federal law and payer guidelines
- Perform audits of provider coding and documentation and provide education for improvement
- Stay updated on coding guidelines and maintain coding certification through required continuing education
What is Required (Qualifications):
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Successful completion of formal education in medical coding
- Certification from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
- One year of medical billing experience in a hospital, medical office, or billing company
- Ability to analyze patient records and recognize pertinent clinical documentation for coding
How to Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications):
- Coding experience in a healthcare setting
- Training in anatomy, physiology, and disease processes
- Proficient writing skills for preparing physician queries
- Familiarity with computer applications, including Excel, Word, Adobe Reader, and Microsoft Outlook
- Previous experience with Epic software
