      Summary:

      Child Mind Institute is seeking a strategic and motivated individual to join the Development team as Director of Development (Principal and Major Gifts Officer/Research). This position will be an integral part of growing principal and major gifts with a primary focus on fundraising for research initiatives and working collaboratively with the Chief Development Officer (CDO) to help develop and implement strategies to strengthen donor acquisition and retention. Strong candidates for this position will have success in frontline fundraising from individual donors and a strong understanding of the prospecting, cultivation, and stewardship strategies needed to identify, engage, and retain six- and seven-figure supporters. This position will report to the CDO and lead efforts to secure principal and major gifts to support groundbreaking research programs of the Child Mind Institute.

      Together with Major Gift Officers, Institutional Advancement team members, the Associate Director, Donor Relations & Strategy, and Campaign Director, the Director of Development will strategically grow important partnerships and develop strong working relationships with research colleagues to ensure thoughtful and effective cross-departmental collaboration. The Director of Development will manage and steward a portfolio of regional and national high net-worth donors and prospects and will be tasked with identifying, qualifying, and absorbing new major donors going forward. The Director of Development will work in close collaboration with Events, Communications, Annual Fund, and Operations colleagues in the planning and implementation of Child Mind Institute’s key fundraising initiatives.

      Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, this is an exempt, full-time position located in our NYC headquarters office.

      Responsibilities:

      • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of major and principal gift donors and prospects with a specific interest in supporting research programs and initiatives related to children’s mental health
      • Ensure the organization’s frequent and strategic participation in/outreach to relevant donor networks and collaboratives
      • Develop and implement tailored cultivation and solicitation strategies to engage donors on regional and national scale
      • Work closely with senior leadership and research staff to develeop a strategic plan for securing philanthropic support for research initiatives
      • Work closely with the CDO to staff the executive office leadership with top tier, high net-worth individual donors and prospects
      • Identify funding priorities within the research portfolio and develop compelling proposals and cases for support
      • Support major donor engagement efforts, including developing or overseeing donor research profiles and talking points for meetings and events
      • Collaborate with development communications and research staff to develop comprehensive proposals, presentations, and impact reports for major and principal gift donors.
      • Serve as a thought partner on special projects, campaigns, and initiatives, including strategic prospecting, events, planning, etc
      • Stay up to date on Child Mind Institute program goals, developments, and strategy to ensure consistently accurate and compelling donor communications
      • Serve as a development contact for top donor relationships
      • Keep abreast of important developments within the local, regional, and national funding landscape

      Qualifications:

      • Minimum seven years development or advancement experience or in a relevant field with increased responsibility
      • Outstanding interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills—ability to fluently communicate and promote the Child Mind Institute’s programmatic work, goals, and strategies
      • Demonstrated success cultivating and soliciting six and seven-figure gifts from individuals and their related entities
      • Experience in successfully fostering effective communication and collaboration among various departments within an organization
      • Strong understanding of research funding processes and experience working with scientific researchers
      • Experience working closely with an organization’s leadership and Board of Directors to close on six and seven-figure gifts
      • Strong writing and editing skills, with a talent for tailoring products to meet the needs of specific donors and leadership
      • Fundraising campaign experience
      • Experience cultivating team initiatives that foster equity and inclusion among staff and stakeholders
      • Comfort working in a matrixed, fast-paced environment
      • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
