- PhD in engineering (mechanical, biomedical, environmental, chemical, or electrical), molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Project management, business, and/or financial management certificate or an acceptable combination of education and experience.
- A minimum of seven (7) years of experience working within an academic setting with related experience in strategy development and implementation of academic and research programs, including strong background in industry-academic partnerships.
- Experience in a senior administrative role managing complex relationships, preferably in a university environment or other large organizations.
- Demonstrated experience in research and research proposal writing, and research management.
- Experience with Public-Private Partnerships or related industrial experience.
- Experience in business development that fosters growth opportunities between complementary organizations.
- Knowledge and experience in organizational governance.
- Experience managing staff effectively.
- Demonstrated experience in financial, human resources and communications management.
- Demonstrated strong, practical understanding of strategic leadership with the ability to define vision and priorities, governance structures, organization design and resource plans, managing, developing and supporting staff, and in managing organizational change.
- Excellent political acuity, tact, judgment and discretion.
- Ability to deal with senior University Officers and external stakeholders in a manner which facilitates cooperation and consensus building.
- Ability to manage funding initiatives with senior level individuals working in both public and private sector environments, to complete grant applications and manage budgets and status updates.
- Demonstrated skills and experience managing and leading staff, preferably in a unionized environment.
- Excellent research, analytical, negotiation, partnership development, project management, organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; creative problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to the promotion of equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace and an ability to work effectively with all constituents in a highly diverse community.
- Ability to work at the highest strategic levels, to gain and maintain the respect of senior administration and also to take strategy and move it through to tactics and action.
- Ability to be comfortable, credible and persuasive within academic, government or business environments; ability to initiate, build and nurture academic and research partnerships.

The CANSTOREnergy project, in the department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, is a national initiative, led by the University of Toronto, aimed at investigating how carbon-capture technology can be developed and successfully deployed in communities across Canada. The project brings together researchers from 11 Canadian universities, along with community, utility and industry partners, to develop technologies that convert carbon-based emissions into useful products, such as fuels and raw materials, and create a net-zero means of seasonal storage for renewable energy that meets specific community needs. Led by researchers from U of T’s Climate Positive Energy Initiative, the collaborative effort is being supported by $24 million through the federal New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF). The CANSTOREnergy project comprises a dynamic and highly collaborative and diverse team of professors, staff, and students all eager to bring the knowledge gained through careful research and high-quality training into practice as quickly as possible. The vision is focused on urgent societal needs in sustainable energy and environmental stewardship.
Your responsibility:
Reporting to the Scientific Director, the Executive Director will bring the strategic operational leadership, direction and oversight in order to ensure the success of the initiative in achieving its mission and vision. As the senior administrative member of the team, the Executive Director will be the pivotal leadership role in the strategic development and management of the CANSTOREnergy project. An especially critical responsibility is developing and executing on a fundraising strategy to ensure sustainability of the initiative on an on-going basis. Responsibilities will include: providing leadership in the development of a strategic plan for NFRF- CANSTOREnergy; playing a major role in writing proposals to a wide variety of potential funders, including granting councils, foundations, public sector agencies and the private sector; development and management of strategic partnerships across institutional, governmental, sectoral and geographic borders; working with the Advancement and I nnovations & Partnerships Office (IPO) on seeking out and developing relationships with potential donors; CANSTOREnergy public relations activities, including coordination of major NFRF - CANSTOREnergy events; oversight of NFRF contracts and accounts; creating a hiring strategy; and full management responsibility for NFRF- CANSTOREnergy technical and administrative staff. Additionally, the Executive Director will build strong connections between settler and Indigenous communities as well as industrial partners to foster a productive and cooperative work environment. They will approach these relationships with a deep understanding on how to handle complex issues and demonstrate sensitivity and tact.
